Some pestering from the masses has seen us pull out the giant gold key, and reenter the stately (and toasty warm ... ahhh) Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion to provide a preview of tonight's BUML Grand Finals. Perhaps the masses just want something to comment on, in which case, go for it, lines are open.
Anyway, its been the BEST SEASON EVER for BUML. Seriously, it has - its the biggest ever, there's been very little rain, teams have been well coordinated, games have been close, and the League Directors have all their hair (or at least, pretty much the same amount as at the start of the season).
But tonight it comes to an end. Some of us are gutted that there's no live internet telecast of the games (we blame tech-guru DanB and AndyL's assumptions that they'd actually be in the games) but we'll have the bottle ready to toast some champagne Ultimate anyway. Who will add their names to the mighty roll of honour? Let's check out the games and of course book your seats at Easts Leagues now.
DIVISION 3 - Griffith Go-Go's vs Mellow Yellow
The unrated Division 3 has certainly thrown up a lot of excitement this season, as teams that have in the past been relegated to 'newbies and/or pissheads and/or cheap meat' status have had something to really fight for in the inaugural Division 3 title. It certainly showed in the Semi Finals, both of which were decided by one point. Props to both the Ultimate Apostles and the Griffith Oh Yeahs for very nearly making it.
Griffith are now in their fifth season and have certainly grown in quality as well as quantity, winning a lot of games. But in the back of their minds will be that early season draw against Mellow Yellow, and all those times Mellow Yellow beat them in 2010 and 2011. But maybe, just maybe, those scars have calloused over and the Go-Go's will have the mental toughness to take the win tonight and put a medal into the mail to postcode 2600 tomorrow morning.
Mellow Yellow ... well, what can be said about this Oliver Reed of an Ultimate team that hasn't been said before? Now in their amazing 16th season and with a much loved BUML12 trophy in the pool room ... and they smile the whole game! Seriously, watch them any time, they'll be grinning. That's the confidence they'll have as they march proudly onto the field tonight.
The question will be whether the slightly aging but well experienced Yellow bones can handle the youthful exhuberance of the Red blooded Griffith Go-Go's. Very hard to tip, and I think the bookies are only taking bets on whether or not the winning point will come from a hammer or not. Expect entertainment.
What should be fun though is the Spirit you can expect to see in this game ... something all them hotly competitive folk at Worlds could take note of. Between them, Griffith and Mellow Yellow have won 8 of the last 18 BUML Spirit Prizes.
DIVISION 2 - Bermuda Triangle vs What the Huck?
This one is straight out of the text-book. The two teams who were clearly the best in the Division have smashed their way through their Semi Final opponents and into the Final.
Bermuda Triangle go into this match undefeated and all smiles this season, after a very tough 2011 when they soldiered hard and grimaced firmly at the bottom of the Division 1 table. Last week they cleaned up a determined Discheads 13-8, in a display that showed off their offensive power. Bermuda are on of the oldest teams in the Monday night competition, with this their 17th season, and having not featured in a League Final since their three losses back in 2006-7, will they finally take a title? All we know is that key play Geoff will be completely fanging for disc.
What the Huck? meanwhile easily took care of the slightly disappointing Tsunami last week 15-4, and have only had two defeated this season, going down to Bermuda 13-7 in March and 13-8 in May. The Huckers first appeared in their current form back at the start of 2011, but can trace their lineage and winning ways back to the former Kelvin Grove Cougars, who took three consecutive Division 2 titles in 2009-10. The big question tonight will be whether they can contain their desire for speed-speed-speed and avoid the unforced errors the Triangle have been able to put on them in the past.
This game will be titanic. Bermuda go in as the deserved favourites, but how will they carry the weight of expectation? What the Huck seem to have the wood over the rest of the competition, but they haven't yet given the Triangles a hard run. Who's cuisine will reign supreme? Internet bookies www.andrewmansaucehouse.com.au are offering $1.20 on Bermuda to win, and $2.80 on What the Huck.
DIVISION 1 - UQ Lovers vs Drop Bears
The fat one - the El Gordo of Brisbane Ultimate 2012. Forget your BPL, forget your Halibut, forget your Mayan apocalypse scenario. This may well be the flying disc battle of the year for this city.
What's exciting here is that while Division 1 finals of reason seasons have sadly been dull, one sided affairs, this game includes Dusty, the most exciting player in sports Ultimate entertainment ... er ... I mean, this game is going to be both loose and close. It'll be close in that these teams have matched up tightly this season, and loose in that ... well, up until last week they both looked like middle-of-the-table teams.
Some folks with an eye for history will be betting against newish team the Drop Bears (despite the age of some of the connections within the team). They didn't even have a proper name at the start of the season, after all. Then they only won six games during the season, losing to UQ 9-11 back in April, but then rolling them easily 17-7 in more recent times. Indeed, that was the start of the Bears 'hayne-train', only losing one game (and that by a single point) since then). So the Drop Bears are in the final because they have some massive momentum, and defeating the much fancied but ultimately challenged Dyspnoeics last week 13-10 (not sure what happened there, but I'm sure we'll get an explanation in the commments).
Given their age and reputation as one of the 'name' clubs in Brisbane, a lot of punters will be jumping on the Loving bandwagon. But remember that UQ have not won a BUML since 2008 or a BPL since about then (sorry, can't be arsed firing up the records machine). Sure they seem to do ok in Division 2 at Uni Games ... but there will be big questions asked and answered tonight. Internet bookies www.andrewmansaucehouse.com.au seem to have suspended betting on this match, while players on both teams face allegations of fantastic drug use over the weekend.
Looking Ahead
And for those looking ahead to next season of BUML and wanting to comment in the comments ... when last we heard fixtures were due to commence on Monday 6 August (with a few weeks of learn to play and pickup beforehand) so mark your calendar and keep an eye on the buml.quda.org website and Facebook. Colmslie will be added as a new venue to further the growth of the competition, and the League Organising Committee as always are looking for more helpers.
Gossip will also be turning towards the makeup of Divisions next season. Its a perennial toughie for the organisers. It seems the winner of Division 3 will be ready to move up into Division 2, to make room for new teams in Division 3, but then the Ghost Who Walks will certainly be seeking to drop into Division 2. So whether Griffith or Mellow get to make the jump will probably come down to the level of interest in new teams entering Division 3 ... maybe if 24 teams are in the mix then BUMLOC will try for four divisions of six. We shall see. After three seasons now, the jump from Division 2 to Division 1 still seems to remain very large - Bermuda still bares the scars from last year and won't be keen to go back. Perhaps the only way is for BUMLOC to apply some roster restrictions on the other five Division 1 teams, so see if a competitive sixth team can be formed? On the other hand, someone's got to come at the bottom of the table ...
Anyway, that's it from us here on the BUML Show at the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion. Tune in next season if someone feels like doing it.

Queensland Open Championships 2012 Preview
Your blogger has bitten way more off than he can chew this year, with TDing Regionals, Griffith stuff, QUDA stuff and real life, to properly preview this tournament. But who needs sleep!?
The tournament returns to Griffith Nathan which is looking shmick. Having the party at the Griffith campus pretty much straight after games finish (although time enough for southsiders to go home and shower I guess) is interesting. Pizza and a bar tab is always a drawcard. I See Red is a good theme - can't wait to see JackL and AndyL in their green outfits. Kinda negative in a photographic way.
Anyway, lets look at the teams.
Firestorm
The A1-AlphaDog-DominantLifeform-TopoftheFoodChain-ArnoldSchwarzenegger-ZombieLich-Galactus-CitizenKane-DalekEmperor of Northern Regionals. They laugh at this tournament (usually this is followed by a crack of thunder), and have managed to get it brought forward a week so they can get proper games at Easterns. And probably rightly so - once you've harvested the best talent and cut the chaff, as well as trained for months like the crazy eager buggers they are, what can you expect, aside from seeing Firestorm at the top of the trophy for another year.
Northerns Form: 2011 1st 2010 1st 2009 1st and 2nd (O/D squad); 2008 1st and 2nd (Troopers/Zippo), 2007 1st.
Player to Watch: All of the tricky beggars. Whoops, they've scored on you again. The one guy who probably hasn't flogged you before is named Dan. He'll flog you too apparently. And for the sake of Queensland pride at Nationals, please don't break any of them (treat J-Mac like he's your mother, which he is (spiritually)).
Towns-Villians
Evil, evil people from the True North, who will no doubt thrive in the hot and humid conditions this weekend. Like mould. Rumour has it that the Villians consider this a warmup tournament for coming again to smash and grab the Div2 Nationals title. We shall see. The roster may be a little short, but they've picked up a dark lords in the form of the best of the Cairns Mob, and as usual some dudes will just appear out of the blue. Looking forward to seeing the new outfits. Expect a forfeit on Sunday morning if tradition holds up.
Northerns Form: 2011 4th 2010 3rd 2009 4th (as Thor); 2008 3rd (as Thor); 2007 2nd (as Thor); 2006 4th (as No Panda).
Player to Watch: Hugh Osborne has moved to Perth like Hamish and Simone before him, but Keith is coming up from Tassie to drink JdR's liquour cabinet and play this one. Watch out for the guy in the old fashioned Dojo shirt.
Slamtown Flatball Club
Slamtown have had some highs and lows in their existence. This year's squad has been hardened up by the BPL, and boasts a very strong Byron Bay flavour. Expectations will be high, but if the gang parties like usual, Day 2 could be tough. If Northerns were My Kitchen Rules, these guys would be like those other famous Gold Coasters, Gary and Peter - know what they're doing but can seem a bit bitchy while doing it. Will battle Ignition to take the second Northern slot to Nationals, in some form or other.
Northerns Form: 2011 3rd 2010 2nd 2009 5th; 2008 4th (as The Pass)
Player to Watch: Stef Rappazzo of course. You can't help but look at him. Like a car wreck on legs. This guy is so tough he sweats blonde playgirls, craps steel I-beams and wees boiling tequila, lemon and salt - and that stuff doesn't have to fall far to hit the ground. Daughters should also be hidden from several members of this team. Jords will be much bigger this year, as he's going to Uni now and was apparently studying on Day 1, as will Dr Phil.
Firestorm Ignition
They've got Mansauce. What more should we bother mentioning? I guess we could give all the other nicknames for the players on the team, just so you can sort them out for your heckling when they take on Slamtown in the Semi-Final. There's Jacksauce, CarlieCarlCarl, NotCarlI'mNotRelatedToHimLeaveMeAloneManHeyIAmTooOver18, Brownsauce, Brownsauce with Chives, TimTom, TomTim, Bendy, Rednut the Fatarsed Wombat, Dazzler, Nugget, Dan Dan Revolution, the Big G, and Paul "I'm a Real Australian Now, Maaaayte, Gimme Some Tinnies or I'll Wooloomooloo Yer Woollangabba, Bloke" S. Want to get that second slot to Nats, rather than the 3rd slot.
Northerns Form: 2011 2nd
Player to Watch: A mix of knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns, and various dressings. Um. Well, they're all kinda funny looking to watch. What the heck, let's talk up Guarin.
Griffith Heroes
A sexual chocolate of two prominent BUML Clubs, plus those darn Webb boys, who'll likely turn up in a 1969 Dodge Charger with the Confederate Flag painted on the roof and the doors welded shut. There's some young talent on this team, playing their first guy only games, which may suit dirty old swill-chucking farts like ... well basically Dusty and JdR. Still, lots of them have barely been on the same field together before, so expect their plays to be copied from Wikipedia.
Northerns Form: Zip
Player to Watch: Let's mention Dan Cohen, who anchored the Griffith AUGs 2011 team and Luke Stark, because he reads this sometimes.
Gympie G-Force
WELCOME GYMPIE! This is awesome to have them at their first big gig. Lots of unknowns to this blog on their sheet, but then three of them played the Q-Hat Final last year, and they've got their KFC-stained hands on Hello Moto, That's Mr Litzow To You Punk, and Former President Boevink, so don't play them down.
Northerns Form: Zip
Player to Watch: Michael Daly has the highest AFDA number of the tournament, at 19490.
Note for tipsters - since you'll all (except maybe for Crazy Pete) be putting Firestorm at the top of your list, we suggest you also tip the round robin goal difference. Assuming five games to 17 and time cap of 90 minutes against the other teams, how many points will Firestorm score against how many will they let in?

State Titles (aka Northern Regionals) Info Announced!
From the press release:
G’day Queenslanders,
I’m pleased to announce that the 8th Queensland Open and Women’s Ultimate Championships 2012 (aka Northern Regionals), will be held at Griffith University Nathan campus in Brisbane , on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March 2012. The event will be hosted as a fundraiser by the Griffith University Ultimate Club, with oversight by QUDA.
Open Division
The Open event will run approximately 9am-5pm both days, similar to previous years. We anticipate 6-8 teams, from Brisbane , the Gold Coast, Townsville, Cairns and Gympie, of which 3-4 will be seriously seeking to qualify for Nationals (all teams of course will be keen to play well!). If you are an ‘unaffiliated’ Brisbane player, I encourage you to consider offering your services and experience early to our developing regional groups - we want to see every Ulti-lad in Queensland playing this event!
Women’s Division
As we only anticipate 2-3 Women’s teams will seek to play the event for the purposes of qualifying for Nationals, the Women’s event is currently anticipated as involving a all-skill-level Women’s Hat on Saturday (which may include some development sessions) and a short qualification tournament on Sunday (which may frankly be a game of Black Betty 1 vs Black Betty 2 to provide Nationals ranking). QUDA is currently considering providing further support for regionally-based women to attend, as well as new player recruitment material. We want to see every Ulti-lass in Queensland playing this event! More details to come.
Registration and Fees
Team and player registration is now open at: http://afda.com/rego/showcompetition.php?competitionid=1147
QUDA-approved player fees will be confirmed approximately one month before the event. As per previous years, in recognition of the flight costs involved and QUDA’s role in promoting the sport state-wide, North Queensland-based players will not be required to pay a player fee.
Timing, Qualification and Rostering
Teams which are using the event to qualify for Nationals 2012 in Newcastle should be aware of the AFDA’s qualification policies and requirements.
Please note that our event will be one week before Eastern, Southern and Western Regionals, which will be held on 10-11 March. The AFDA Board has agreed with our request to host the 2012 event early, to allow our teams to gain match practice at those other Regionals, should they wish.
Equally, this provides an opportunity for interstate teams and players to come and play at our event. This improves our event, but I should note a few things to ensure the spirit of Nationals qualification is maintained, specifically:
- interstate teams and players seeking to qualify for Nationals via their own region will not be counted in terms of wildcard slot qualification
- Queensland teams seeking to qualify for Nationals should not pick up interstate players who would be qualifying for Nationals via their own region (as this would screw up our local qualification process)
- Because this is nonetheless our State Championship, non-Nationals bound teams should limit any interstate pickup players to three or less.
If you have any issues with regard these ideas, please get in touch. We’re learning.
After Nationals 2012, AFDA is considering reviewing the Regionals/Nationals system with the possibility of allowing different Regionals on different dates in a permament sense, so how this all goes for Northerns may prove an interesting test.
So mark those calendars, get on a team, and we look forward to it!

QUDA Executive Officer and Griffith Club Secretary

What's going on on Mondays?
Rumours are rife that Dyspnoeics are dominating the fields at Griffith on Monday nights - as Mansauce is far to busy with other mixed sport to play ultimate on other nights!
GUUC are rocking the autobusse, providing some outrageous game play for new-comers and old-hands to be involved with.
Tonight is a battle of the universities, with historical UQ field 7 being open for a learn to play and pickup night. If you're into the latest movements you will have no doubt be eager to buck tradition, and play with the new kids at Griffith.
18th July - UQ Pickup 7:30 - 9.
Griffith pickup (& learn to play) 7 - 9:15.
As usual, bring your black and whites + water bottle & cleats. Smack talk is recommended.
25th July - Annerley learn to play.
The next MOnday - GAME ON!! Season 2 (or so we believe)

AUG News

If you had your ear to the ground lately, aside from earthquakes you might hear rumblings of AUG News. Apparently, the event will be back on the Gold Coast, perhaps to give first years one more taste of schoolies without the toolies brand. *Sigh. The games will be held at the Runaway Bay SUPER(funhappy) Sports Centre, which boasts many fine meat trays and tri-coloured pastas.
GO GRIFFITH!! YOU UNHYGIENIC YET CHARMING SWINE!!

Regionals 2011 Results
Here's one that I picked up on ye ol' Telepathy Machine.
While Northern Regionals 2011 (or the Queensland Open Ultimate Championships, as JdR reckons we should call them so that non-Ultimate players can understand what we’re on about) has been and gone, it’s the BUB’s role to provide a bit of a record for future historians.
Northern Regionals 2011 – 19-20 February.
Results
1. Firestorm (Brisbane)
2. Firestorm Ignition (Brisbane)
3. Slamtown Flatball Club (Gold Coast)
4. Towns Villains (Townsville)
5. Axis of Awesome (Cairns)
6. The Quinn’s Strike Back (Townsville)
Spirit – Axis of Awesome
This was the first time that the tournament had left Brisbane, and was the largest Northern Regionals to date with 83 players registered. This was the first time that Cairns entered a team, and that Townsville entered two teams.
By all reports it was stinking hot (Regionals being early this year as Nationals is earlier than usual), but the fields were good and the Townsville Ultimate community very welcoming.
Meanwhile in the Women’s Division, Black Betty won over Red Betty and Betty White in the single evening event in Brisbane.
Check out the Regionals tag for more history.
I Heard a Rumour
1. Tip for the wise – never ever consider that going to play a BUML pickup game is more important than celebrating one’s wedding anniversary. Thankfully last week’s rain prevented a certain mountainous designer from making such a rookie mistake.
2. Apparently Thrustfest II – the Griffith Hat that’s coming up on 12 March – will feature a full on Uni student house party with spa and plenty of good spirit. Bonus is that people will be able to do a nude run from the AFL Field showers to the party under a reasonable amount of tree-cover. Rego at: http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=1549 Forward THRUST!
3. Speaking of Griffith - nice new shirts were paraded at BUML on Monday. Are they going to be the only team showing off this season? Comment lines are open.
4. Disc Golfers from around Brisbane will be meeting at the Muddy Farmer on 8 March to plan their total domination of all parks and gardens within South East Queensland. You’re all on the disc-golf email list, aren’t you (at least so you know how to avoid them?) http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/quda-discgolf/

Crunchtime for Thrustfest!
Tuesday is your last chance to register for this Saturday's planned Thrustfest tournament.
Rego at: http://www.afda.com/rego/showcompetition.php?competitionid=849
The organisers have drawn the line that if enough people (about 40) aren't registered by Tuesday night then the event may have to be cancelled.
Thrustfest is the new Griffith Nathan Ultimate Frisbee Club's go at establishing a new tournament, one that's reasonably close to the start of Semester 2 at all SEQ's universities and thereby hopefully a great way to get the Uni season going.
So your support won't just deliver you a fun day of Ultimate, but help solidify the new Club's arrival on the scene.
What: One day of fun Ultimate - to make it suitable for beginners and the elite and everyone in between we're having a hat, which of course is a great way to meet new people too.
Where: 21st August, 2010 - roughly 9am-4pm
Where: Griffith Nathan AFL Field - Kessels Road - current venue for BUML
Cost: TBC but probably $20 per player.
Includes: Lunch, fields, insurance, fruit.

Go-Going with Griffith
We figured it was getting near time to point you towards the new Griffith Nathan Ultimate Frisbee Club's website - http://www.griffithultimate.org/ The site is evolving and there's plenty of material still to get up there, but huge props to Casey F for getting the site up and adding to it here and there. Truly a model of Ultimate Club website work!
QUDA has put a fair bit of effort into getting Ultimate properly established at the Griffith Nathan campus, and this is bearing fruit, both for Griffith students and for Brisbane Ultimate in general.
Most obviously, establishing the Griffith Club has enabled BUML to access regular and very cheap fields in the form of the excellent Griffith Nathan AFL field. Yes, some folks may prefer to play at Greenslopes, but the growth of the Monday night league dictates finding extra fields, and the Griffith Nathan AFL field is a pretty good one, and not far off the South East Freeway. Both QUDA and the Griffith Club have worked hard to build a relationship with the field owners, so as to ensure we're there for the long term.
Just as important has been the addition of the Griffith Go-Go's team to the Monday night League. Having the team regularly playing at Nathan makes it easy for Griffith students to have a go at Ultimate, and so far around15-16 different Griffith students (particularly those living in the neighbourhood) have been down for some games, plus some Uni staff. Having the University semester misaligned to the BUML seasons is a bit of a hassle, but the Club's on-field presence is solidifying and there are hopes for a second team to join the fray soon. And maybe we'll develop on our existing mongrel defence to learn to score some points and win a game some time!
A big influence on that will be the success in recruiting new members at the Semester 2 Clubs Market Day on Thursday 29 July. QUDA put in a huge effort to get one of the most noticable stalls in place for Orientation Week at Griffith back in February, and hopefully we can back that up again and pick up some of those fabled North American imports that UQ seems to annually get.
As well as students, the Griffith Nathan Club is keen to mark its turf by getting local players who live in the neighbourhood of Nathan (Salisbury, Moorooka, Coopers Plains, Acacia Ridge, Mt Gravatt and Sunnybank) on-board. If this is you, maybe consider a switch to the Go-Go's in the future - at the least you know you're always only 10 minutes drive from your home ground!
The Griffith Club is also just getting itself together to run a one day tournament in August, tentatively titled THRUSTFEST (a play on UQ's annual Lovefest tournament - which we'll hopefully enter when it comes around in September again). The THRUSTFEST tournament hopes to showcase teams of students and alumni from around SEQ, as well as a few other similarly themed teams. More to come.

Welcome Griffith and UQ Folks
So yesterday, Ultimate Frisbee had stalls at both the UQ and Griffith Nathan O-Week Market Days, and they gave away heaps and heaps of those nice promotional postcards that feature both the official quda.org website and our most wonderful Brisbane Ultimate Disc blog here.
And going by the stats in the stately mansion's IT sub-basement, they're flocking here. So we say HELLO! and also "Scroll down or look right for more sensible information" and "please don't worry too much about the occasionally silly thing you'll see in the comments sections".
We hope to see you all on the fields soon, and hope you'll visit the blog here on a regular basis and become part of the fun.
Just those reminders:
Free Learn to Play at Griffith Uni Nathan AFL Field Kessels Rd at 7pm this Monday 1 March and next Monday 8 March, as well as 10am-12pm Saturday 6 March.
Free Learn to Play at UQ St Lucia Oval 7 Coleridge St at 6pm this Wednesday 3 March and Wednesday 10 March.
Come on down and have a go.

'Cause You Are Too Busy Being Fabulous
[If you're new to this blog and to Brisbane Ultimate - please check out the 'Useful Info' links on the right]
It's heck-busy here at the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion this week, and all around Brisbane Ultimate as a whole. If you step into the house, you'll be lucky to find a post-it note telling you what's up. But lets have a quick run through.
ITEM: So on Sunday it was lovely and we decided to step from the mansion and take my disc-golf-virgin-ass down to the Yeronga Disc Golf Course for a look-see. Under the careful tutorage of Master Bruce, I can now say my cherry is popped as the plastic hit the chains on the front nine. Entertainingly, we ran into two dudes (hi Luke and Rueben!) who'd seen the course and heard about disc golf and decided to give it a go. It was their lucky day to get the run down from Master Bruce. Disc Golf is on every Sunday from 3pm at the Yeronga Course. Its good stuff. Bring your mini-esky and a hat. Prams are also very useful.
ITEM: BUML started last night, and your blogger was at both Griffith Nathan and AJSC to enjoy some fantastic fields and watch some 'still a little bit rusty' Ultimate. It was great to see so many people back, and of course the lights shining at both venues. The BUML Organising Committee (BUMLOC) have found their feet for this season, but are looking ahead to the next, so if you've got any ideas or preferences, get onto them in the next month or so.
ITEM: It's the O-Week Market Day tomorrow at both UQ St Lucia and Griffith Nathan. Both groups will be armed with the fancy new recruitment postcards that QUDA/ BUDA/ WUFL/ UQ have arrranged. Helpers are still sought for Griffith Nathan, where we hope to establish a Club and get a late team into BUML.
ITEM: Thursday sees the start of this year's Brisbane Premier League, and what better way to start than with the inaugural BPL Launch Lunch in the Valley. Get in touch if you're keen to attend - tickets are selling fast. Meanwhile,IgorWetnose is down in the very bowels of the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion, working on this season's draw design and tipping comp rules. Expect to see these up here asap, here at your number one home of BPL coverage (accept no substitutes).
ITEM: Of course, this weekend sees the Brisbane-Canberra Invitational Tournament, featuring the best of the best out at the State Hockey Centre at Lytton. Heaps of people are heading along for a look. Keep checking out the Firestorm website for more updates.
Crikey! We'll be buggered by the end of this!

Brisbane Ultimate Blog presents ... Queensland Club of the Year 2009
At the QUDA Bash (occurring as we auto-set this to be posted for all you folks who’re missing it), the Brisbane Ultimate Blog was proud to present the award for the 2009 BUB Club of the Year!
In 2006 it was Bootius Maximus.
In 2007 it was the University of Queensland Ultimate Lovers.
In 2008, the UQ Lovers won again!
Who won in 2009?
But before we post the winner up here, lets go through the process and the countdown.
You'll remember how its done from previous years (we strive for a bit of consistency. Indeed, some clubs may be able to chart their points progress from year to year, to work out what years were better than others (all are good of course (how many sets of brackets can we fit in here?))))
Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament, or have been included in the previous year’s Club of the Year counting.
2. Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players.
3. Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
4. Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.
5. A tournament must have at least four teams to be included, and be by open invitation/qualification (hence, NUFL not included, as only certain clubs can compete).
Determining Points
1. Points are given for placing in relation to the size of the tournament. Last place gets 100 points, each placing above that gets 100 points, but to 10 teams.
2. If there are more than 10 teams, the maximum points are 1000, and the points per placing distributed down to 100 points for last.
3. Spirit points are given as 20 points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 160 points.
4. There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is 100 points, 700-1400km is 200 points, more than 1400km is 300 points
5. Bonus points up to 100 for miscellaneous at the discretion of the award organiser.
6. If there are two divisions in a tournament, second division is treated as a separate event, although points are valued at 75%.
Last year we tried to add a bit of an intangible through Captain voting. But most Captains were too busydrinking with something else to vote, so we decided its too hard.
Sorry if we’ve made any mistakes – let us know and we’ll fix them.
Second to last tangent - we also looked this year at how we could account for League Clubs, but weren't able to come up with a good formula, particularly given BUML has yet to finish for the year. Maybe next time around, Mellow Yellow.
Final tangent – thanks to everyone who’s interested in this. We’re pleased that the prestige (well, noting at least) of this Award has grown from year to year. As always, we offer it with a knowledge of its limitations – and invite anyone who reckons they can do better to get on with it!! :0
So take a seat and let us get into the Countdown!
11th-14th Lounge Lizards (426 points), Barbarians (300 points), Dojo Mojo (150 points), Griffith Guerillas (100 points)
All these teams only played one tournament this year, and entered calculations based on their past experiences as a Club. Maybe next year they’ll enhance their existence? Most sympathy to the Guerillas, who came 12th in Division 1 at AUGs, and probably would’ve smashed a few teams in Division 2, but that’s the gamble. It was great to see the Dojo Club remembering what weekend Ultimate was all about, with a visit to the Slamtown Invitational in the middle of the year. The year was a great third run at Regionals for the Brisbane Barbarians, demonstrating their pluck by taking third place and getting their name on the trophy. And providing that a great idea will never die, the Lounge Lizards came off their rock(ers) for a run at Halibut, taking a healthy 8th position and plenty of points.
10th Slamtown Flatball Club (700 points)
2009 was a tricky year for interpreting the Gold Coast’s growing strength on the Queensland Ultimate scene. Indeed, as the quality has grown, many GC players took the opportunity to play for a variety of clubs through the year, including the Stimulated combo at Halibut and all sorts of groupings at Big Sky 9s. But near as we in the stately mansion can determine, the SFC got a roll at Regionals for 5th (100 points) and Lovefest for 3rd (500 points)
9th Fresh Fries Upsized (800 points)
There will no doubt be claims that the Fresh Fries and the Trevor clubs have a very similar roster and ethos, and therefore should have their points combined. But, you need to have pretty much the same name from tournament to tournament to be a real club in our eyes! Sorry gang (but add those points up if you wish, and there is still a bit of a surprise below!) The Fresh Fries are included under their own name, even though they only played one event in 2009 (Eastern Juniors), because they also played last year. 600 points for winning the 6 team tussle, plus a further 200 points for the travel.
8th Townsville (903 points)
Was there a club called Townsville this year? Well, kinda, and we figure the continuity of some Townsville squads over the years means that we’re adding up their points together as one group. Argue all you want, but remember its a big effort for Townsville to get along to tournaments elsewhere in Queensland, and whether as Thor at Regionals, or the Downstairs Mixup at Halibut, we’re adding up those points, adding in those travel bonuses, and naming them 8th this year (down from 6th in 2008).
7th Trevor Goes to the Club of the Year Awards (1094 points)
Its been a big year for the Trevor franchise, with teams including Trevor Goes to Slamtown, Trevor Goes to Halibut, Trevor Goes to Lovefest and Trevor Skies Mike Neild getting plenty of attention and racking up the points for participation, participation, participation (and having fun too).
Indeed, it is with great pleasure that we name Trevor as winners of the Brisbane Ultimate Blog NEW Club of the Year Award! Well done gang!
6th QUT River Rats (1163 points)
Another big year for the QUTies, one of Queensland's oldest clubs. Successful again in League play, but its their adventures of their Women’s squad at Regionals that really set them apart ... wait, hang on, they did win a nice bronze medal for the first time in Div 2 at AUGs .... plus pulling 9th place at the highly competitive Big Sky 9s. Actually, its probably QUT’s biggest year ever! (For those checking – 2006 680 points, 2007 900 points, 2008 580 points).
5th Delirium (1271 points)
Pulled together to represent Brisbane and Queensland at Mixed Nationals 2009, Delirium showed off the finest shirts in all northerndom while gathering the best talent. A warm-up at Lovefest plus the long road to Hobart and the 12th of 23 result gave them the goods!
4th Sultry (1470 points)
A busy final year for the sauciest logo in Queensland Ultimate sees the ladies go fourth. Two teams plus a spirit win at Regionals, a trip to Perth for Nationals, plus down to Canberra for the BCI, led to a healthy total.
3rd Mind the Gap (1707 points)
Once again this year, the venerable Mind the Gap showed everyone how its done, putting teams in for Halibut (6th), Lovefest (2nd) and Big Sky 9s (8th). Yes, participation is the name of the game, even when you’ve got the zimmer frame waiting patiently for you on the sideline (although perhaps the recruitment of some younger folk for a Gap-year also helped).
2nd Firestorm (2360 points)
A big year for Firestorm, with 5th place at Nationals, 1st and 2nd at Northern Regionals, and 8th at the inaugural Brisbane-Canberra Invitational down south there (looking forward to BCI2010 in Brisbane though!). A big year of travel too, to Perth and Canberra.
Now, some may argue that the rules of the BUB Club of the Year are skewed to prevent proper recognition of Firestorm as a club. All we can say in response is that you need to get your arses to more than three tournaments a year for us to take you seriously (and not come dead last at one of them)! More nicely, note that Firestorm topped its 2100 points of 2008 and 1440 of 2007 – maybe next year?
1st University of Queensland Ultimate Lovers (3415)
Yes, its a three-peat, and a smashing one at that (topping 2408 points from last year). But what do you expect from the biggest, oldest, best organised (Passion aside!) and most famous Ultimate Club in Queensland? In addition to its many League teams, UQ had a team at Slamtown, Halibut, two at Lovefest which it organised, and Big Sky 9’s, as well of course the best result for a Queensland team this year, taking home GOLD GOLD GOLD from the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast in October.
Well done UQ. If you ever get yourself a clubhouse (or even a small piece of wall at a pub), you’ll have three Club of the Year trophies now to put up there.
Well done UQ, and to everyone involved in Ultimate Clubs in Queensland!
But most Captains were too busy

Brisbane Ultimate Blog to Present Prestigious Award Once Again
Well, the heirarchy over at the QUDA HQ have invited Wettie and me to get out the tuxes and once again present the Queensland Ultimate Club of the Year Award at next week's QUDA Bash.
A quick search of this blog will demonstrate the esteemed and growing history of the award. Previous winners include the UQ Lovers (2008), the UQ Lovers (2007) and Bootius Maximus (2006).
The award is determined based on a calculation of club results at tournaments during the year. Here's the rules:
----------------------------------------------
Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament.
2. Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players.
Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
3. Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.
3. Points are given for winning Spirit. Points are calculated as 20 points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 160 points.
4. There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is 100 points, 700-1400km is 200 points, more than 1400km is 300 points
5. Bonus points up to 25 for miscellaneous at the discretion of the organiser.
A couple of changes to this year:
- A club also qualifies for calculation if it only entered one tournament, but it was a tournament it played in last year (ie it has a history of playing the tournament) - this is to recognise continuity from year to year. So for example, the Brisbane Barbarians, in their third year of playing Regionals, are in.
- We've done away with the 'Captains Voting' element we tried last year - it was too hard.
- If there are two divisions at the tournament, these are treated as two different tournaments. However, points in the lower division are awarded at 75%. So for example, QUTies will probably receive more points for their 3rd in Div 2 at AUGs than Griffith for its 12th in Div 1, but not a lot more.
---------------------------------------------
2009 Tournaments
The following tournaments are currently (hopefully) entering calculations - please let us know if we've missed ones you've played in: BCI, Northern Regionals, Nationals, Eastern Youths, Slamtown Invitational, Brisbane Indoor, Lovefest, AUGs, Mixed Nats and Big Sky 9s.
Qualifying Clubs
We think the following Clubs will be given points (based on the above). Please let us know if we've missed something: UQ Lovers, Mind the Gap, Lounge Lizards, Firestorm, Sultry, Delirium, Thor, Slamtown, Barbarians, Downstairs Mixup, Fresh Fries, Trevor, QUTies and Griffith Guerillas.

BPL 2009-2 Round 8 Draw

Remember that this week is, again, at Griffith instead of Annerley. Rehash of message from Stu:
BPL'ers
Due to AJSC top surfacing their fields and trying to fix the lights, the next two weeks (08/10/09 and 15/10/09) of BPL will be played at the AFL fields on Nathan campus of Griffith Uni, just off Kessels road.
Apologies to most people that will get this twice!!
Regards
Stu
p.s. This is for BPL only, it doesn't affect any other leagues.

Uni Games - Day Four
Following yesterday's games, one QLD team is finished, and the other two are in the fight of their lives today to bring home the goods.
UQ
As stated in yesterday's post, UQ only had one game yesterday, a 3pm semi-final. It ended up being against Monash, and the Lovers continued their dominance over Monash with a win. They playoff for the division one Gold medal at 1pm today. Results yesterday:
UQ 11-8 Monash
GU
Not the most memorable tournament for the GUerillas in terms of results, but they no doubt made up for that on the dance floor and all other aspects of partying. The finished off the tournament with an unenviable 0-9 record to take out the wooden spoon in division one with 12th place. They couldn't be considered a walkover however, with only 3 teams getting to the points cap against them, and those 3 teams are all going to finish in the top 6. Results yesterday:
GU 4-14 MQU
GU 8-11 UWA
QUT
QUT are trying to prove that they are the best of the rest and take out the bronze medal in division two. While it could be argued that gold in division two is the best of the rest, the top two teams of this division are clearly in the wrong division. We will happily give them the "Best of the Rest" tag if they take out the medal. Game on at 1pm as well, on the field next to UQ, against CSU, a team they beat 14-3 on Wednesday. Results yesterday:
QUT 15-1 ACU
QUT 6-12 UniSA/Adelaide
Look forward to a post with results and, hopefully, some photos of the celebrations.

Uni Games - Day Three
Day Three had a lot of closer games as teams were pitted against teams that were closely aligned to their skill level. Still up to 2 medals available for QLD teams.
UQ
The juggernaut keeps on rolling. They have not lost a game since their first game against Flinders and are now awaiting the result of a pre-semi to see who they play in the semi. They have the morning off as the current 2nd "placed" team. They play the winner of Ballarat v Monash in the semi at 3pm today. They played Monash yesterday in their cross over pool for a victory, but will not be taking anyone lightly whoever they come up against. Results yesterday:
UQ 9-8 USyd
UQ 10-5 Monash
GU
Unfortunately for the GUerillas, they haven't been able to get anything in the W column this week, not through lack of trying though. They have a game at 1pm today, a win in which will see them into the 9/10 playoff, a loss putting them in the 11/12 playoff. Results yesterday:
GU 7-12 UTS
GU 4-13 ANU
QUT
The other QLD still in the hunt for a medal. QUT have a quarter final against ACU, a team they gave a pantsing to yesterday, but they will not be taking it lightly. They will be looking for a win to get into the semi-finals at 1pm, where past results count for nothing. Results yesterday:
QUT 15-0 ACU
QUT 14-3 CSU
QUT 8-2 UOW
Tune in tomorrow to find out where the teams sit, and get down there if you can.

Uni Games - Day Two
Day Two saw teams fighting for survival and went a long way to deciding where teams would finish up the week.
UQ
UQ overcame the disappointment of losing their first game to win both games, against Macquarie (Sydney) and Australian National Uni (Canberra). These wins see them go into the super-awesome pool with the team that topped their pool (Flinders) and the 1st and 2nd placed teams for the other pool (Monash and Newcastle). Results yesterday:
UQ 15-4 MQU
UQ 15-7 ANU
GU
Griffith haven't had much love so far in the tournament. Their 2 games yesterday resulted in 2 more defeats, which sees them finish bottom of their initial pool. They had a heartbreaking loss to Melbourne on double-game point. They should now have more competitive games against teams of their own level. Results yesterday:
GU 10-11 MELB
GU 7-15 ANU
QUT
One good win and one touch up were QUT's results on day 2. They got the win over UWS to finish 2nd in their initial pool and stay alive in the competition, but then fell victim to a seeding error and lost 15-0 to the Kiwis. Still in the hunt for a medal though, but may now be aiming for the bronzed colour one. Results yesterday:
QUT 15-6 USW
QUT 0-15 NZVUW
Tune in tomorrow to find out who is still in the hunt to come home with some bling.
