We here at the stately mansion are once again stretched in all directions, and no more so than this Saturday where there are three entirely separate opportunities for flying disc fun.
The Australian Beach Ultimate Squad are having their training camp at Coolangatta all weekend. This is their last time together before departing overseas to battle on the sands of Italy for gritty barefoot glory! The squad will be set up on Coolangatta beach, close to the corner of Warner St and Marine Pde 10am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday. They're looking for people to play against each afternoon from about 2pm.
Of course if that doesn't appeal, Dusty-and-aL-speed beach Ultimate is on as usual, from 10am Saturday morning at Palm Beach.
Meanwhile, sisters are doing it for themselves with the second SatHATaday session at New Farm Park from 2-4pm.
But perhaps most excitingly, this weekend sees the Queensland Disc Golf Championships, and for those who don't lurk on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/quda-discgolf/, let us tell ya, its firing up in a manner almost comparable to the Tour de France (well, not really, but this will be the most exciting weekend of disc golf in Queensland ever!)

Blimey, we're blogging about Disc Golf (Bout time?)
JdR has left the Pool Room and has sent this telegram:
"For the historical record and your children's children's interest (when know down disc golf dominates the universe), here are the results from the recent disc golf tournament the Queensland Big Bash. Looks like the gang from the Brisbane Disc Golf Club are starting to generate some solid numbers!"
If you look at it long enough, it starts to make sense. You need to focus but relax your eyes at the same time.

Yeah Golf Monday
If you're at a loss for some frisbee activities next Monday (particularly if the weather looks likely to prevent another night of BUML), why not get along to some disc golf in the morning?
A low-key, disc golf tourney will be held on Monday the 2nd of May at the course at Yeronga.
Venue: Fehlberg Park – Yeronga / Farifield
Meet in the carpark on Hyde Rd (off of Fairfield Rd)
Date: Mon 2nd May
Time: from 9:00am – registration
9:45 players meeting (all players to attend)
10:00 tee off
~12:00 presentations
Format: 18 holes, single stroke
Course: Fehlberg Park, using the std comp nines – C1 & C2
Divisions: Depending upon who shows up
Cost: $2 which covers insurance & prizes
Discs: BYO golf discs or ultrastars
For sale (new from $10 each)
Loaners available
Notes: there is a water tap on the course
The nearest toilets are ~1km away.

Regionals 2011 Results
Here's one that I picked up on ye ol' Telepathy Machine.
While Northern Regionals 2011 (or the Queensland Open Ultimate Championships, as JdR reckons we should call them so that non-Ultimate players can understand what we’re on about) has been and gone, it’s the BUB’s role to provide a bit of a record for future historians.

This was the first time that the tournament had left Brisbane, and was the largest Northern Regionals to date with 83 players registered. This was the first time that Cairns entered a team, and that Townsville entered two teams.
By all reports it was stinking hot (Regionals being early this year as Nationals is earlier than usual), but the fields were good and the Townsville Ultimate community very welcoming.
Meanwhile in the Women’s Division, Black Betty won over Red Betty and Betty White in the single evening event in Brisbane.

I Heard a Rumour
1. Tip for the wise – never ever consider that going to play a BUML pickup game is more important than celebrating one’s wedding anniversary. Thankfully last week’s rain prevented a certain mountainous designer from making such a rookie mistake.
2. Apparently Thrustfest II – the Griffith Hat that’s coming up on 12 March – will feature a full on Uni student house party with spa and plenty of good spirit. Bonus is that people will be able to do a nude run from the AFL Field showers to the party under a reasonable amount of tree-cover. Rego at: http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=1549 Forward THRUST!
3. Speaking of Griffith - nice new shirts were paraded at BUML on Monday. Are they going to be the only team showing off this season? Comment lines are open.
4. Disc Golfers from around Brisbane will be meeting at the Muddy Farmer on 8 March to plan their total domination of all parks and gardens within South East Queensland. You’re all on the disc-golf email list, aren’t you (at least so you know how to avoid them?) http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/quda-discgolf/

The Ten Commandments Say Nothing About Disc Golf
So last week during a secret mission to the Moreton Bay region (more to come on that one, maybe), your blogger made a slight detour to investigate the John Bray Park Disc Golf Course, and what a fine looking course it is.
The visit was timely, given a comment here on the blog recently. Disc Golf in Brisbane is going from strength to strength it seems.
People continue to meet and play a round regularly at 3pm Sundays at Fehlberg Park, Hyde Rd Yeronga.

TD Tim has posted a quick report on last weekend's Queensland Disc Golf Championships:
The 2010 Qld Disc Golf Champs were held over the last weekend at Yeronga.
The event attracted 19 players, including 4 from WA and 1 from ACT, with 5 people playing their first tourney.
In short, the competition was hot and the weather was great.

- Bruce McNaughton for winning Men's Masters
- Darnley Pearson for winning Men's Advanced Amateur

Federal Election Fever and Flying Disc Sports - 21 August
So a few folks have noticed that our Prime Minister has called for an election to be held on the same day as Thrustfest - the new one day hat being hosted by the new Griffith Nathan Ultimate Frisbee Club (oh, and the Disc Golf Championships too, but lets talk Thrustfest!)
But fear not voters and thrusters - you can vote AND thrust, but you need to plan a little bit. Check out the info at: http://aec.gov.au/Voting/ways_to_vote/
If You Live Not Far From the Fields - Moreton Electorate
If you are enrolled in the same electorate as the Griffith Nathan AFL field where Thrustfest will be held, then you can vote via Ordinary Vote between 8am and 6pm (ie before or after the tournament). There is traditionally a polling booth on the Griffith Campus, as building N35, about 15 minutes walk from the fields.
Hence:
Option 1 - if you live near the fields, you can vote near the fields.
If You Live Elsewhere in Queensland
Or of course you can cast an Ordinary Vote in your local electorate between leaving home and getting to the tournament, or on your way home if you're really slack (booths are open 8am to 6pm). If you're a Queenslander, you can also vote in any polling booth in Queensland (like the one near the fields) via an Absentee Vote.
Hence:
Option 2 - vote near home before or after the tournament.
Option 3 - Queenslanders can absentee vote near the fields.
If You Are Seriously Disorganised Or Coming From Interstate
Check the rules, but consider an Early Vote at an Electoral Commission Office (there are a lot of these around). A Postal Vote is possible but you may be a bit late if you're reading this today.
If you're coming from interstate, you can't just rock up to any polling booth.
Option 4 - Early vote at an AEC office.
Option 5 - Organise a postal vote if time permits.
If You're Some Foreign Devil*
You don't need to do anything - compulsory voting is for enrolled Australian citizens, but its worth visiting an Australian polling booth with one of your friends - ideally one at a public school so you can get the full P&C BBQ and/or cake stall experience of civil society and compulsory voting (quite alien to most of the world).
Talk to an Aussie about their experience of voting, although it can be considered rude to ask who they voted for (it's a secret ballot after all).
Final tip - make sure you've got two discs with you in the voting booth, and if in doubt, flip them (ask the opposing captain to help with that).
*I mean this in the ironic sense - we like you guys! ;)

The Urge to Surge
Did you hear on the grapevine that 15 people turned up to the Labour Day Monday disc golf session? Wow!
Seems people are liking the free-ness and relaxed-ness of disc golf, particularly going into the cooler months.
The gang meet every Sunday at 3pm at the carpark on the corner of Hyde Road and Wilton Terrace, to play the Fairfield course. Bring a drink, a hat and any old disc you've got (or you can usually borrow one). Portable esky optional.

'Cause You Are Too Busy Being Fabulous

It's heck-busy here at the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion this week, and all around Brisbane Ultimate as a whole. If you step into the house, you'll be lucky to find a post-it note telling you what's up. But lets have a quick run through.
ITEM: So on Sunday it was lovely and we decided to step from the mansion and take my disc-golf-virgin-ass down to the Yeronga Disc Golf Course for a look-see. Under the careful tutorage of Master Bruce, I can now say my cherry is popped as the plastic hit the chains on the front nine. Entertainingly, we ran into two dudes (hi Luke and Rueben!) who'd seen the course and heard about disc golf and decided to give it a go. It was their lucky day to get the run down from Master Bruce. Disc Golf is on every Sunday from 3pm at the Yeronga Course. Its good stuff. Bring your mini-esky and a hat. Prams are also very useful.
ITEM: BUML started last night, and your blogger was at both Griffith Nathan and AJSC to enjoy some fantastic fields and watch some 'still a little bit rusty' Ultimate. It was great to see so many people back, and of course the lights shining at both venues. The BUML Organising Committee (BUMLOC) have found their feet for this season, but are looking ahead to the next, so if you've got any ideas or preferences, get onto them in the next month or so.
ITEM: It's the O-Week Market Day tomorrow at both UQ St Lucia and Griffith Nathan. Both groups will be armed with the fancy new recruitment postcards that QUDA/ BUDA/ WUFL/ UQ have arrranged. Helpers are still sought for Griffith Nathan, where we hope to establish a Club and get a late team into BUML.
ITEM: Thursday sees the start of this year's Brisbane Premier League, and what better way to start than with the inaugural BPL Launch Lunch in the Valley. Get in touch if you're keen to attend - tickets are selling fast. Meanwhile,IgorWetnose is down in the very bowels of the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion, working on this season's draw design and tipping comp rules. Expect to see these up here asap, here at your number one home of BPL coverage (accept no substitutes).

Queensland's Other Flying Disc National Champion!
So there's still some people on a high about the Australian University Games Ultimate win by the University of Queensland (and good on them too).
But the Brisbane Ultimate Blog can break the news that our own Tim Marchbank won the Open Division of the Australian Disc Golf Championships down at Geelong last weekend, over what even an untalented eye like myself can tell was a large and shit-hot field.
We understand Tim was aided and abetted by our other blog-favourite, Bruce McNaughton who nailed a 4th placing in the Masters (making the most of having to spend so much time out of town for work at the moment ... we miss you Bruce!)

Join the Elite (or Just the Usual Gang of Idiots) at this Weekend's Disc Golf Extravaganza
Its only a few days until Brisbane's biggest disc golf event for 2009! And its perfect for anyone looking to try it out for the first time.
Saturday sees the Our Darling Ultra-Star only event - rego from 2.30pm and Tee Off from 3.30pm, at the Yeronga Disc Golf Course.
This is the one for all you newbies and/or Ultimate players. Its an Ultra-star (ie Ultimate disc) only event - 18 holes around the permanent course at Fehlberg Park, Off Hyde Rd in Yeronga - the course starts at the Yeronga Kindergarten Carpark. Here's the course layout (from the quda.org website).
Cost is $5 (to cover insurance and prizes). There'll be Open and Women's Divisions, to double your chances of becoming the champion! And wise players will of course bring a few discrete 'roadies' to keep themselves lubricated (although discussion are under way to visit the South Cricket Club bar before attempting the back 9).
Weather forecast for Saturday is fine and sunny with a top of 26 - perfect for a walk in the park.

Become a Genuine Queensland Champion
We know that most of you readers out there are Queenslanders, and when we see you around we're happy to call you "Champ" 'cos it makes you feel good.
But as for many of us we'll not be winning the Halibut (aka Queensland Ultimate Championships) any time soon, in a few weekend's time you'll get a second shake of the sauce bottle at the Queensland Disc Golf Championships!
There are two events over the weekend:
Saturday 17 October sees the "Our Darling" tournament at the Yeronga Disc Gold Course. This is the one for new disc-golfers and those who think they're pretty good with the old Ultra-star (aka the disc used for Ultimate). 18 holes, with registration from 2.30pm and tee off at 3.30pm. Boronia Bushland Disc Golf Course
We've heard on the grapevine that there's a disc golf course at the Boronia Bushland Reserve aka Greenbank Park (about 33km south of the Brisbane CBD).

ANZAC Day Disc Golf
If you're not going to Nationals and looking for something to keep your hand in, why not a round of Disc Golf at Yeronga, followed by a visit to the Yeronga RSL for a drink and some two-up?
10:30am - Disc golf - meet at the end of Hyde Road in Yeronga
12:30pm (or so) - Yeronga RSL for beers and 2-up.
2pm - watch the Collingwood vs Essendon game.
