Brisbane Ultimate Blog presents ... Queensland Club of the Year 2009

At the QUDA Bash (occurring as we auto-set this to be posted for all you folks who’re missing it), the Brisbane Ultimate Blog was proud to present the award for the 2009 BUB Club of the Year!

In 2006 it was Bootius Maximus.

In 2007 it was the University of Queensland Ultimate Lovers.

In 2008, the UQ Lovers won again!

Who won in 2009?

But before we post the winner up here, lets go through the process and the countdown.

You'll remember how its done from previous years (we strive for a bit of consistency. Indeed, some clubs may be able to chart their points progress from year to year, to work out what years were better than others (all are good of course (how many sets of brackets can we fit in here?))))

Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament, or have been included in the previous year’s Club of the Year counting.
2. Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players.
3. Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
4. Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.
5. A tournament must have at least four teams to be included, and be by open invitation/qualification (hence, NUFL not included, as only certain clubs can compete).

Determining Points
1. Points are given for placing in relation to the size of the tournament. Last place gets 100 points, each placing above that gets 100 points, but to 10 teams.
2. If there are more than 10 teams, the maximum points are 1000, and the points per placing distributed down to 100 points for last.
3. Spirit points are given as 20 points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 160 points.
4. There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is 100 points, 700-1400km is 200 points, more than 1400km is 300 points
5. Bonus points up to 100 for miscellaneous at the discretion of the award organiser.
6. If there are two divisions in a tournament, second division is treated as a separate event, although points are valued at 75%.

Last year we tried to add a bit of an intangible through Captain voting. But most Captains were too busy drinking with something else to vote, so we decided its too hard.

Sorry if we’ve made any mistakes – let us know and we’ll fix them.

Second to last tangent - we also looked this year at how we could account for League Clubs, but weren't able to come up with a good formula, particularly given BUML has yet to finish for the year. Maybe next time around, Mellow Yellow.

Final tangent – thanks to everyone who’s interested in this. We’re pleased that the prestige (well, noting at least) of this Award has grown from year to year. As always, we offer it with a knowledge of its limitations – and invite anyone who reckons they can do better to get on with it!! :0

So take a seat and let us get into the Countdown!

11th-14th Lounge Lizards (426 points), Barbarians (300 points), Dojo Mojo (150 points), Griffith Guerillas (100 points)
All these teams only played one tournament this year, and entered calculations based on their past experiences as a Club. Maybe next year they’ll enhance their existence? Most sympathy to the Guerillas, who came 12th in Division 1 at AUGs, and probably would’ve smashed a few teams in Division 2, but that’s the gamble. It was great to see the Dojo Club remembering what weekend Ultimate was all about, with a visit to the Slamtown Invitational in the middle of the year. The year was a great third run at Regionals for the Brisbane Barbarians, demonstrating their pluck by taking third place and getting their name on the trophy. And providing that a great idea will never die, the Lounge Lizards came off their rock(ers) for a run at Halibut, taking a healthy 8th position and plenty of points.

10th Slamtown Flatball Club (700 points)
2009 was a tricky year for interpreting the Gold Coast’s growing strength on the Queensland Ultimate scene. Indeed, as the quality has grown, many GC players took the opportunity to play for a variety of clubs through the year, including the Stimulated combo at Halibut and all sorts of groupings at Big Sky 9s. But near as we in the stately mansion can determine, the SFC got a roll at Regionals for 5th (100 points) and Lovefest for 3rd (500 points)

9th Fresh Fries Upsized (800 points)
There will no doubt be claims that the Fresh Fries and the Trevor clubs have a very similar roster and ethos, and therefore should have their points combined. But, you need to have pretty much the same name from tournament to tournament to be a real club in our eyes! Sorry gang (but add those points up if you wish, and there is still a bit of a surprise below!) The Fresh Fries are included under their own name, even though they only played one event in 2009 (Eastern Juniors), because they also played last year. 600 points for winning the 6 team tussle, plus a further 200 points for the travel.

8th Townsville (903 points)
Was there a club called Townsville this year? Well, kinda, and we figure the continuity of some Townsville squads over the years means that we’re adding up their points together as one group. Argue all you want, but remember its a big effort for Townsville to get along to tournaments elsewhere in Queensland, and whether as Thor at Regionals, or the Downstairs Mixup at Halibut, we’re adding up those points, adding in those travel bonuses, and naming them 8th this year (down from 6th in 2008).

7th Trevor Goes to the Club of the Year Awards (1094 points)
Its been a big year for the Trevor franchise, with teams including Trevor Goes to Slamtown, Trevor Goes to Halibut, Trevor Goes to Lovefest and Trevor Skies Mike Neild getting plenty of attention and racking up the points for participation, participation, participation (and having fun too).

Indeed, it is with great pleasure that we name Trevor as winners of the Brisbane Ultimate Blog NEW Club of the Year Award! Well done gang!

6th QUT River Rats (1163 points)
Another big year for the QUTies, one of Queensland's oldest clubs. Successful again in League play, but its their adventures of their Women’s squad at Regionals that really set them apart ... wait, hang on, they did win a nice bronze medal for the first time in Div 2 at AUGs .... plus pulling 9th place at the highly competitive Big Sky 9s. Actually, its probably QUT’s biggest year ever! (For those checking – 2006 680 points, 2007 900 points, 2008 580 points).

5th Delirium (1271 points)
Pulled together to represent Brisbane and Queensland at Mixed Nationals 2009, Delirium showed off the finest shirts in all northerndom while gathering the best talent. A warm-up at Lovefest plus the long road to Hobart and the 12th of 23 result gave them the goods!

4th Sultry (1470 points)
A busy final year for the sauciest logo in Queensland Ultimate sees the ladies go fourth. Two teams plus a spirit win at Regionals, a trip to Perth for Nationals, plus down to Canberra for the BCI, led to a healthy total.

3rd Mind the Gap (1707 points)
Once again this year, the venerable Mind the Gap showed everyone how its done, putting teams in for Halibut (6th), Lovefest (2nd) and Big Sky 9s (8th). Yes, participation is the name of the game, even when you’ve got the zimmer frame waiting patiently for you on the sideline (although perhaps the recruitment of some younger folk for a Gap-year also helped).

2nd Firestorm (2360 points)
A big year for Firestorm, with 5th place at Nationals, 1st and 2nd at Northern Regionals, and 8th at the inaugural Brisbane-Canberra Invitational down south there (looking forward to BCI2010 in Brisbane though!). A big year of travel too, to Perth and Canberra.

Now, some may argue that the rules of the BUB Club of the Year are skewed to prevent proper recognition of Firestorm as a club. All we can say in response is that you need to get your arses to more than three tournaments a year for us to take you seriously (and not come dead last at one of them)! More nicely, note that Firestorm topped its 2100 points of 2008 and 1440 of 2007 – maybe next year?

1st University of Queensland Ultimate Lovers (3415)
Yes, its a three-peat, and a smashing one at that (topping 2408 points from last year). But what do you expect from the biggest, oldest, best organised (Passion aside!) and most famous Ultimate Club in Queensland? In addition to its many League teams, UQ had a team at Slamtown, Halibut, two at Lovefest which it organised, and Big Sky 9’s, as well of course the best result for a Queensland team this year, taking home GOLD GOLD GOLD from the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast in October.

Well done UQ. If you ever get yourself a clubhouse (or even a small piece of wall at a pub), you’ll have three Club of the Year trophies now to put up there.

Well done UQ, and to everyone involved in Ultimate Clubs in Queensland!

Brisbane Ultimate Blog to Present Prestigious Award Once Again

Well, the heirarchy over at the QUDA HQ have invited Wettie and me to get out the tuxes and once again present the Queensland Ultimate Club of the Year Award at next week's QUDA Bash.

A quick search of this blog will demonstrate the esteemed and growing history of the award. Previous winners include the UQ Lovers (2008), the UQ Lovers (2007) and Bootius Maximus (2006).

The award is determined based on a calculation of club results at tournaments during the year. Here's the rules:

----------------------------------------------
Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament.
2. Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players.
Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
3. Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.

3. Points are given for winning Spirit. Points are calculated as 20 points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 160 points.
4. There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is 100 points, 700-1400km is 200 points, more than 1400km is 300 points
5. Bonus points up to 25 for miscellaneous at the discretion of the organiser.

A couple of changes to this year:
- A club also qualifies for calculation if it only entered one tournament, but it was a tournament it played in last year (ie it has a history of playing the tournament) - this is to recognise continuity from year to year. So for example, the Brisbane Barbarians, in their third year of playing Regionals, are in.
- We've done away with the 'Captains Voting' element we tried last year - it was too hard.
- If there are two divisions at the tournament, these are treated as two different tournaments. However, points in the lower division are awarded at 75%. So for example, QUTies will probably receive more points for their 3rd in Div 2 at AUGs than Griffith for its 12th in Div 1, but not a lot more.
---------------------------------------------

2009 Tournaments
The following tournaments are currently (hopefully) entering calculations - please let us know if we've missed ones you've played in: BCI, Northern Regionals, Nationals, Eastern Youths, Slamtown Invitational, Brisbane Indoor, Lovefest, AUGs, Mixed Nats and Big Sky 9s.

Qualifying Clubs
We think the following Clubs will be given points (based on the above). Please let us know if we've missed something: UQ Lovers, Mind the Gap, Lounge Lizards, Firestorm, Sultry, Delirium, Thor, Slamtown, Barbarians, Downstairs Mixup, Fresh Fries, Trevor, QUTies and Griffith Guerillas.

2008 Queensland Ultimate Club of the Year

In 2006 it was Bootius Maximus.

In 2007 it was the University of Queensland Lovers.

The 2008 Queensland Club of the Year was announced earlier this evening at the glamourous QUDA bash (more to come on that one).

But before we slap the winner up here, lets go through the process and the countdown.

You'll remember how its done from last year.

Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have traveled over 700km for one tournament.

There was one addition to the process this year. To introduce a capacity to take account for the 'intangibles' of a good club, we invited the Club Captains or equivalent for each of the clubs to distribute 100 points amongst the other clubs, based on their sense of who had a good year and deserves recognition in the Club of the Year stakes.

Final tangent - we also looked this year at how we could account for League Clubs, but weren't able to come up with a good formula, particularly given BUML and BPL have yet to finish for the year. Maybe next time around, Mellow Yellow.

So lets get into the Countdown!

11th - Minx 380 points
Minx, the spunky kid sister of Sultry, erupted into existence this year under the leadership of the minxy Peta McNaughton, and after a good turnout at Regionals the ladies had a strong first showing at Nationals, being the centre of much attention.

10th - Lounge Lizards 395 points
Now in their third year, the Lounge Lizards are perhaps the most sexually attractive mixed Ultimate team in Brisbane, being a byword for fun tournament Ultimate. Showings at Lovefest, the Queensland Qualifier, and Mixed Nationals totted up their points.

9th - QUT River Rats 525 points
Another big year for the QUTies, one of Queensland's oldest clubs. Successful again in League play, but its their adventures at Lovefest and more importantly, to the 2008 Australian University Games all the way down to Melbourne that landed them points (along with Sam's triumph!)

8th - Sultry 719 points
Simply great, with the saucy lasses picking up points at Regionals and Nationals.

7th - Great Sugoi! 995 points
Burst onto the mixed scene to do very very well thank you at the Queensland Qualifier and Mixed Nats to snaggle a high spot.

6th - Townsville 1159 points
The controversial decision to play as individual pickups at Halibut this year bore fruit in a refreshed team having a fabo time at Mixed Nats. Earlier in the year, Thor's cracking 3th-4th playoff at Regionals got the northerners into the top 6 for the first time.

5th - Mind the Gap 1525 points
The venerable ones recruited some younger legs for an extended campaign in 2008, with squads competing at Halibut, the Queensland Qualifier and Mixed Nationals.

Now we move into the top tier, with an almost inexplicable TIE for third place

Equal 3rd - Gold Coast 1530 points
2008 will probably go down in history as the year Gold Coast Ultimate finally started to break out. 3rd place as the Slamtown Flatball Club at Halibut set heads a spinning, while a great showing by the Griffith Gold Coast squad at AUGs down in Melbourne kept the points ticking over. Lots to promise on next year as the new league builds and builds.

Equal 3rd - Byron Bay 1530 points
Ended the year quietly with the Badman's Birthday Bash, and have seen some of their top people shift to North America and Brisbane, but as a whole, a triumph for the Byron Bay and Channon cooperative collective. Teams from Byron Bay hit Regionals, Nationals, Halibut and Lovefest, and the as the youth contingent comes through, will continue to grow as a force, boxing above its population weight for some time year.

2nd - Firestorm 2100 points
Someone had to come second and this year it's Firestorm. Now in their third year, Firestorm has continued to develop itself on field and off, getting two big squads to Regionals and then down to Coffs for Nationals. Huge plans on the drawing board for the next few years.

But only one team could win, and this time for the second year running!

1st - University of Queensland 2402 points

Where do we start in talking about another great year for the University of Queensland Club? Truely, this is the Club that many others aspire to be in or like. When not busy running their own league, or putting teams into BUML, WUFL and BPL, the UQ Lovers down down to Sydney for the East Coast Challenge, put two teams into Halibut and the Lovefest (which they ran), and charmed everyone at the Queensland Qualifier and Mixed Nationals. The Lover-butt pants set the standard for all others.

Well done UQ, and to everyone involved in Ultimate Clubs in Queensland!

Queensland Qualifier - Quick Results

Here's the quick results ... we might get some more detail into this post later in the week.

Congratulations to Mind the Gap, who defeated Great!Sugoi! in the Final, 15-8.

The Lounge Lizards took third place, defeating the UQ Lovers in the playoff, 8-5.

Spirit winners were Great!Sugoi!

So the South Queensland Qualifiers for Mixed Nationals 2008, in order of qualification are:

1. Mind the Gap
2. Great!Sugoi!
3. UQ Lovers*
4. Lounge Lizards*

*These two teams agreed that their earlier matchup, where UQ won, would be used to agree the final placing for the tournament.

Queensland Qualifier

The Queensland Qualifier tournament is on this Saturday.

Spectators most welcome - particularly for the Final! Supporter drinks will be available.

Team fees are expected to be announced today via email - just waiting on the UQ Club to forward its budget to QUDA for approval.

This will be a tough event - the team that comes first will gain a very high seed at Mixed Nats, thanks to Bootius' success last year on behalf of the South Queensland zone.

Questions and tips can be posted in the Comments section below.

Qualifier Update

The official email won't be going out from the QUDA Communications Bunker until tomorrow, but news on the wire is that next weekend's Queensland Qualifier has been reduced to four teams and a one day event.

Miscommunication led the Townsville based Hand of God to register even though they weren't planning to make the 1000km trip down, while UQ Happy and the Channon's Mismatch, realising that bringing their new players to the tournament would result in some potentially demoralising defeats by the elite of South Queensland Ultimate, particularly with the more amenable Lovefest only a few weeks away, wasn't the best idea ever. Meanwhile, the Slamtown Flatball Club is missing some key leadership folk and Byron Bay's the Pass is in a bit of a lull.

So, if you live in SEQ and want to play at Mixed Nationals 2008, you should do yourself a favour and get onto either the UQ Lovers, the Lounge Lizards, Great!Sugoi! or the venerable Mind the Gap, as quick as you can. The way we at the BUB understand the rostering rules for AMUC - they are such that teams can only pick up one male and one female that haven't played with the team in the previous two years - so playing the QQ with your preferred gang is a way to make sure you're all good.

Anyway, please await the official communication via the usual QUDA outlets.

LotDIII - the King of Clubs and the Queen of Diamonds

Thanks for the comment for more Dan. We live to please. I can think of no better King of Clubs for the Lounge Lizard Deck.

And no, I haven't had the chance to gather any particular Brazil news, but here's the definite Queen of Diamonds.

2007 Queensland Club of the Year

You'll have to forgive me for another long and wordy post, but here's the info backing up the 2007 Queensland Club of the Year.
*Update – now edited with further Halibut results*
The objective was to recognise the growth of ongoing clubs in Queensland and Northern NSW – both in terms of doing well at tournaments, but also in terms of just getting themselves to tournaments in the first place. So not just looking at who won, but being able to compare the clubs on a somewhat objective scale, and possibly motivate people from year to year in getting to more tournaments and invoking a club identity more often.

Before we get into the results, here were the ground rules:

Qualifying Elements
1. Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament.
2. Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players.

So how'd Queensland's Clubs do in 2007? Lets go in reverse order, and hope that my math is roughly right:

10th on 735 points – GU-nit (Gold Coast Griffith Mixed)
Sprang onto the scene this year under the leadership of crazy Stef Rapazzo and got themselves to Halibut (15th of 16* for 160 points), Lovefest (equal 5th of 6 for 150 points) and AUGs (18th of 20 for 200 points). Travelling up to Brisbane twice got two lots of 100 travel points, plus an extra 25 points for the ridiculously good outfits at the Halibut party.

8th 9th on 780 points – Concrete Donkey (Townsville Mixed)
Concrete Donkey quality for getting themselves together and down from Townsville (so 200 travel points for that) to play, and play well at that (8th of 16* is 580 points). Down from Shoot To Kill's 1112 points of 2006.

7th 8th on 960 points – Thor (Townsville/Byron Bay Open)
Did a lot of travel (to Brisbane for Regionals (200 points) and then to Melbourne for Nationals (300 points), and had a great time, although results on paper (2nd of 4 at Regionals for 300 points, then 15th of 16 at Nationals for 160 points) held them steady.

9th on 750 points7th on 990 points - The Pass (Byron Bay Mixed)
Byron have really amped up their profile this year, with the Pass getting to both Halibut (13th of 16* for 280 points 9th of 16 for 520 points) and Lovefest (equal 5th of 6 for 150 points), and picking up Spirit at Lovefest (120 points). Two lots of travel bonus there too (200 points). Seeing some of the Byron players at BPL and as part of Thor's Nationals campaign was great too, as was Badman's Birthday Bash at Lennox Heads in November. For future reference, I have been informed that the Pass is a famous surf spot. There you go. Oh yeah, and it looks like the Byron region will be sending more Juniors to the World's selection camp in January than all of Queensland put together, so more to come!

6th on 1030 points – QUTies (QUT Mixed)
Up from 680 points in 2006, QUTies picked up well with a good result at AUGs (11th of 20 for 530 points) and Lovefest (3rd of 6 for 400 points). Travel to the Gold Coast gets another 100 points. QUTies being one of the dominant YUFL teams is one of the reasons we should try to work out a way to integrate points for Leagues into this Club of the Year thing.

5th on 1380 points – Firestorm (Brisbane Open)
Two teams at Regionals (Firestorm 1st of 4 for 400 points and Firefighters 3rd of 4 for 200 points), was followed by 8th at Nationals (for 580 points) and the Melbourne travel bonus of 200 points.

4th on 1480 points – Sultry (Brisbane Women's)
A second great year for Sultry and up from 1280 points in 2006. Two teams at Nationals coming in at 9th (520 points) and 10th (460 points) of 16, plus two teams times 200 travel points for getting to Melbourne, and 100 discretionary points for the one day event at Regionals, all gave a big score.

3rd on 1640 points – Lounge Lizards (Brisbane Mixed)
A big second year for the Lizards, taking two teams to Halibut (6th of 16* for 700 points, and 14th for 220 points), one to Lovefest (4th of 6 for 300 points) and 21st at Mixed Nats for 220 points, plus the travel bonus to Sydney (200 points).

2nd on 1700 points – Bootius Maximus (Brisbane Mixed)
Probably Queensland's best known club thanks to a fantastic 2006 campaign (where it would've been club of the year with a huge 2991 points), Bootius scored again with a maximum 1000 points for winning Mixed Nationals (in Sydney so a further 200 travel points), plus 500 points for coming 2nd of 6 at Lovefest.

1st on 2040 points – UQ Lovers (Brisbane Mixed)
Won AUGs for 1000 points, plus 100 points for travelling to the Gold Coast. Won Lovefest for 600 points. 12th of 16* at Halibut for a further 340 points and the Club of the Year 2007 title. Well done!

Final thoughts – I am sure people will see different ways to weight the points, but I can say I made my best estimate for rewarding turning up, travelling and playing well, and then ran the team results through it. I was pleased to find total points that seemed about right, and that certainly gave Clubs some encouragement for 2008! Good luck to you all, and as usual, comments and corrections welcome.

*Most Halibut results are estimates – final results have yet to be confirmed – however these results do not appear likely to influence placings a lot?
*Edit – well, the fine folk of the Pass emailed me to say they came in 9th at Halibut rather than my poor guess of 13th – while slides them up the rankings to 7th. Fixed now!

Thunking Up the Queensland Club of the Year Award

Hey people,

In getting everything just right for the upcoming QUDA BASH, Maylin (bless her) asked a few people if a bit of award presenting would be appropriate.

Yes I said! And so I got to thinking, and decided that one thing that would be quite cool would be a "Queensland Club of the Year" Award.

But rather than the higher-effort approach for the AFDA Club fo the Year (which involves nominations addressing several on and off-field critera, then voting by the AFDA Board), I'd pinch some of Potty's work on Walkabout, which was about giving points for attending and succeeding in tournaments, and modify it to suit our Queensland environment.

A key thing I also want to do is that, aside from recognising the overall top club, is to recognise all the other clubs and what they've been up to. Perhaps they can aim to improve from year to year to generate some bragging rights.

So I've done my thinking and this is what I've got. I figured comments from the readers here might be useful, so your thoughts welcome. But I ask that you not spoil the surprise for the QUDA Bash by trying to work out the results for 2007 (which of course I will post here eventually)!

Guidelines - Qualifying Elements
- Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament (we don't want "one-off" groups involved, but do want to ensure non-Brisbane efforts are recognised).
- Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players (to include Byron).
- Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
- Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.
- A tournament must have at least four teams to be included, and be by open invitation/qualification (hence, NUFL not included, as only certain clubs can compete).

Guidelines - Determining Points
- Points are given for placing in relation to the size of the tournament. Bottom place gets x points, each placing above that gets x points, but to 10 teams.
- If there are more than 10 teams, the top points are 10x, and the points per placing distributed down to x points for bottom.
- Spirit points are given as y points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 8y points.
- There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is z points, 700-1400km is 2z points, more than 1400km is 3z points. (So you can see, Gold Coast/Byron/Townsville get recognised for getting to Brisbane, while all teams get recognised for travelling to Sydney/Adelaide/Perth/etc).

Test: Last Year's Club of the Year
Applying this to the *2006* results (with some small pieces of subjective judgement in the input stage), here's what I get:
  1. Bootius Maximus 2991 points (success at Halibut and Mixed Nats + WUCC make it big)
  2. UQ Lovers 2076 points (Halibut, Lovefest and AUGs success in Adelaide)
  3. Dojo Mojo 1400 points (Regionals and Nationals success)
  4. 74 Flood 1390 points (Regionals, Nationals, WUCC + spirit at Nats)
  5. Sultry 1200 points (special for Regionals, Nationals + spirit at Nats)
  6. Buggers 1150 points (Regionals and Nationals)
  7. Shoot to Kill 1112 points (travelling and a good result at Halibut helps!)
  8. Crikey 1065 points (travelling and a good result in Ballarat helps!)
  9. Lounge Lizards 890 points (Halibut and Lovefest, but stayed in Brisbane)
  10. QUTies 500 points (Lovefest and AUGs, but low results)
  11. No Panda 400 points (travelling to Regionals gets them on the board)

Sound good?

I'm looking forward to announcing the 2007 result (pending Dusty getting me the Halibut results! C'mon Dusty!!). Clubs in the running seem to be the Pass (Byron), GU-nit, Bootius, Lovers, Firestorm, Sultry, QUTies, Lizards, Thor, Armidale Freeze and Concrete Donkey.

PTD or PTP?

After a big event like Mixed Nationals, many people talk about PTD or Post-Tournament Depression. That is, after the highs of a whole weekend or more of fun Ultimate, catching up with friends, being away from home and dancing or drinking or both a hell of a lot, its tough to go back to everyday life, and lethargy sets in.

So what am I doing wrong? Instead of PTD, I suffer Post Tournament Panic! Coming back from Mixed Nats, I've got this huge list of stuff to get done. I mean its Thursday now and I still haven't unpacked my suitcase!

So the blog's been a little quiet. But here's a photo of the Supreme Bad-Ass Overlord of Queensland Ultimate, Mr Dusty Czok:

Halibut Preview - Lounge Lizards

Hercules, twelve labours, Halibut, and so on. MY GOD I'VE MADE IT! Today: Lounge Lizards Original and Lounge Lizards Spicy

FORM: You've seen the logo – either last year or down here or check out here.

I am impatiently awaiting the courier to arrive with the new shirts.

Yes, this is the second year of the Lounge Lizards, Brisbane's premier laid-back mixed Ultimate team. Except now it’s a Club, with two teams. Take that Booty!

The strength and sense of fun at the YUFL Monday Mixed has clearly flowed through to the Lounge Lizard Conglomerate. The Lounge Lizard teams are not so much A and B or X and Y as LAF (lots of fun) and TMF (too much fun). Especially with the addition of folks like Sarah S, Geoff and Donna, and crazy Andy and 'Ticia.

PARTY: We have Dusty up front and a pretty solid backline, although feature several Ulti-party rookies that we'll be looking to educate.

TIP: We came 7th at Halibut last year, and did well at Lovefest2006, picking up Spirit at the latter too. So I figured I'd tip improvement in 2007 – with LL Original going for 6th and LL Spicy going for 7th.

Halibut is Three Weeks Away!

Halibut is only three weeks away, and the Lounge Lizards are continuing their air of organised preparation, with the release of the team seal.

Of course, our appearance of organisation is but a ruse - we'll be mindless rabble on the day, I can assure everyone.

Mixed Nats Qualification and Guesses

So the Mixed Nats qualification policy is out at afda.com. Essentially, rather than the Nats N/S/E/W regions, there are twelve zones, each with at least one slot. Different State/Territories have responsibility for nominating teams to take those slots - they might pick rep teams, or run tournaments, or just announce or something.

As I understand it (some grapevine and some guesses):
- NSW have announced a State Championships tournament to determine their six teams.
- Victoria are running a 6 week league (if I've got it right) to determine their teams.
- SA has called for interest in teams taking their two slots.
- Tasmania will send a rep team for their slot I presume? They might have to have selections!!??!!
- Presumably the NT and Northern WA slots will not be taken up, and become wildcards and go to NSW and Vic?
- Southern WA might struggle to send two teams (particularly given their upcoming NUFL travel), freeing up another wildcard?
- Don't know how NZFDA will manage its two slotsAny

In Queensland
- Presumably Townsville will get its act together and claim the North Qld slot. I suspect if they're clever they'll also recruit a few southerners (up to 25% of the squad can be 'out of zone').
- QUDA hasn't made an announcement on the two South Qld slots, although I hear Byron are interested in trying for one of them, setting the cat amongst the pigeons? QUDA certainly wouldn't be keen to use Halibut as a qualifier, as teams have already formed etc, and it's probably right to keep Halibut a special event for Mixed teams around the country
- I'd have to imagine though we'll end up with a Queensland qualifier - Byron, Booty, Non-Booty plus something like the Lounge Lizards?

Getting Sorted for Halibut

The biggest and best team for Halibut 2007 is getting itself together, with today's launch of its yahoogroup and the announcement of the new "Face of the Lounge Lizards"!
