Learn to Play & Captains Meeting

Hello BUML Community,

Learn to play:We are pleased to announce the beginning of the BUML season with two nights of introduction learn to play sessions.  Coaches will provided on the night to help all the beginners learn to throw and the rules of the game. Pick up games will be played on the adjacent fields, so all BUML members are encouraged to come down for pick up and bring your friends.  

Captains Meeting:

Hi BUML Captains, I would like to hold a quick captains meeting at 8pm at the learn to play night to discuss, team division allocation, captains obligations, fields liaisons, team roster, team fee payment and to answer any questions you may have about the league.

We would like as many of the BUML captains or a team representative to attend as possible.  Please email BUML OC if you or a team rep is unable to attend.

What: BUML Learn to Play and Pick up game.
Where: QUT Kelvin Grove, Sports Ln, Kelvin Grove.

When: Arrive 6.30 for 7:00-9:00pm

Captains Meeting: 8pm

Dates: 25th Feb

Bring: White shirt, Dark Shirt, Cleat boots, Water bottle, Disc, friends, family, work mates, girlfriends, boyfriends, Grandma, anyone!

Marvin Gaye with Mixed Nats?

Indeed.

It's an exciting time for Ultimate in South East Queensland, and we're predicting the biggest, most competitive Mixed Nats qualifying series in the North for some time. With the big one being hosted by Brisbane's cooler, older cousin (Melbourne), it is quite likely that many a frisbee player will fancy an excuse to visit the cultural capital in October.

This blogger has been keeping his ear to the ground on the matter since whispers began even at the Australian Ultimate Championship in April.

We have heard that Dusty is keen to shake off the first four letters of his name and train hard over winter. Don't believe it? Neither do we, and in fact we demand photo evidence and a training blog from this veteran partier.

The Heroes club seem to be out in front in terms of organisation, with training more-or-less being underway. This basically involves a bit of forethought into the clubs general Sunday trainings, which will remain open to all. More specific training is rumoured to begin in July. It is likely that the usual conundrum applies here, with enough male interest for 2 teams but maybe just enough women for one.

Word is that Reece and Sophie want to play with young people. Reece plans to get a team together, while Sophie has been attending Heroes training. That said, the Heroes list is aging, and it will be up to Agent Orange star Vanessa to bring the required party and show Soph that 25 year olds can be a bag of fun ;)

Trevor has publicly announced that UQ will be making a bid again this year. Will they go under their usual name of Lovers, or their recent unusual alias of QUTies? One would expect training to begin around August. Lovefest will definitely be on the agenda.

But what will happen with the usuals? We were under the impression that John Doe players were on a 2-year contract, ending after this seasons tournament. But a wise punter in a pub pointed out that Al, Stu and Maylin etc. were a good chance of making Mundi's this year - the Australian Mixed team who will play together at Mixed Nats.

Will we see a Slamtown / Byron collaboration? Will all these ideas fall apart, leaving Heroes, Agent Orange and Discheads all going to Melbourne, as joked about by that wise punter in the pub? We hope not.

It is possible that we will see around 5 teams playing off to qualify. Last year, we were given two spots and a wild-card. Who knows what we would get if we had 5 teams at qualifiers? Probably JdR.

A Return From Obscurity

Tournament Junkies have nothing to whinge about for the latter part of the year. Those who traveled (or refused to travel) to Bathurst for Mixed Nats or Townsville for Men's Northern Regionals will be thrilled to hear that

Mixed Nats returns to Melbourne in 2011!

This is good news for those who like coffee, cooler weather, direct flights, trams and cycling (Around the Bay in a Day the following weekend, sounds like a good holiday).

Movember Still Has a Few Days To Go

Our mortal brains are still reeling from DojoMojo's win on Thursday night to properly put fingers to keyboards to record the event further for posterior, but that doesn't mean you can't donate in the last few days of Movember 2010.

The Brisbane Ultimate Blog has been proud to continue our tradition of support (2009 Phil Stocks, 2008 Matt Anscomb and 2007 Rodney and Mansauce (again)) and this year we've done our bit for facial hair and men's health via aL, Dusty and Mansauce.

Thunking Up the Queensland Club of the Year Award

Hey people,

In getting everything just right for the upcoming QUDA BASH, Maylin (bless her) asked a few people if a bit of award presenting would be appropriate.

Yes I said! And so I got to thinking, and decided that one thing that would be quite cool would be a "Queensland Club of the Year" Award.

But rather than the higher-effort approach for the AFDA Club fo the Year (which involves nominations addressing several on and off-field critera, then voting by the AFDA Board), I'd pinch some of Potty's work on Walkabout, which was about giving points for attending and succeeding in tournaments, and modify it to suit our Queensland environment.

A key thing I also want to do is that, aside from recognising the overall top club, is to recognise all the other clubs and what they've been up to. Perhaps they can aim to improve from year to year to generate some bragging rights.

So I've done my thinking and this is what I've got. I figured comments from the readers here might be useful, so your thoughts welcome. But I ask that you not spoil the surprise for the QUDA Bash by trying to work out the results for 2007 (which of course I will post here eventually)!

Guidelines - Qualifying Elements
- Clubs must play two tournaments, or have travelled over 700km for one tournament (we don't want "one-off" groups involved, but do want to ensure non-Brisbane efforts are recognised).
- Club must be majority Qld or NNSW players (to include Byron).
- Players may play for multiple clubs through the year, but only one club per event.
- Clubs may accrue additional points via multiple teams in the same event.
- A tournament must have at least four teams to be included, and be by open invitation/qualification (hence, NUFL not included, as only certain clubs can compete).

Guidelines - Determining Points
- Points are given for placing in relation to the size of the tournament. Bottom place gets x points, each placing above that gets x points, but to 10 teams.
- If there are more than 10 teams, the top points are 10x, and the points per placing distributed down to x points for bottom.
- Spirit points are given as y points per team at the tournament - so for example, winning spirit at a 8 team tournament is 8y points.
- There is a travel bonus to recognise that getting a team a distance takes more effort. 50km-700km is z points, 700-1400km is 2z points, more than 1400km is 3z points. (So you can see, Gold Coast/Byron/Townsville get recognised for getting to Brisbane, while all teams get recognised for travelling to Sydney/Adelaide/Perth/etc).

Test: Last Year's Club of the Year
Applying this to the *2006* results (with some small pieces of subjective judgement in the input stage), here's what I get:

1. Bootius Maximus 2991 points (success at Halibut and Mixed Nats + WUCC make it big)
2. UQ Lovers 2076 points (Halibut, Lovefest and AUGs success in Adelaide)
3. Dojo Mojo 1400 points (Regionals and Nationals success)
4. 74 Flood 1390 points (Regionals, Nationals, WUCC + spirit at Nats)
5. Sultry 1200 points (special for Regionals, Nationals + spirit at Nats)
6. Buggers 1150 points (Regionals and Nationals)
7. Shoot to Kill 1112 points (travelling and a good result at Halibut helps!)
8. Crikey 1065 points (travelling and a good result in Ballarat helps!)
9. Lounge Lizards 890 points (Halibut and Lovefest, but stayed in Brisbane)
10. QUTies 500 points (Lovefest and AUGs, but low results)
11. No Panda 400 points (travelling to Regionals gets them on the board)

Sound good?

I'm looking forward to announcing the 2007 result (pending Dusty getting me the Halibut results! C'mon Dusty!!). Clubs in the running seem to be the Pass (Byron), GU-nit, Bootius, Lovers, Firestorm, Sultry, QUTies, Lizards, Thor, Armidale Freeze and Concrete Donkey.

PTD or PTP?

After a big event like Mixed Nationals, many people talk about PTD or Post-Tournament Depression. That is, after the highs of a whole weekend or more of fun Ultimate, catching up with friends, being away from home and dancing or drinking or both a hell of a lot, its tough to go back to everyday life, and lethargy sets in.

So what am I doing wrong? Instead of PTD, I suffer Post Tournament Panic! Coming back from Mixed Nats, I've got this huge list of stuff to get done. I mean its Thursday now and I still haven't unpacked my suitcase!
