One exciting fish tournament seeks unattached female ultimate players. Must be enthusiastic and willing to spend a weekend on the Gold Coast. Party skills preferred, but not essential

The Mayor has put out a call for any women who aren't already playing to register to help out the teams that are struggling for women. The weekend will be great fun and I am sure the mayor can sweeten the deal if you need some convincing.

This time it is not just the lesser gender men that need you... but the entire sport of ultimate.

How's this?

Well Halibut is the greatest ultimate tournament known to man, and Halibut is all but ready to rock out with 10 teams in a worlds year.... which is freaking phenomenal.

However, 3 of our teams are incomplete.

Griffith A-Team, Taste My Rainbow (TSV) , and The Peoples Republic of Pikkup(Pick Up) could all stand to attract between 2 - 4 ladies each.  Griffith could stand to pick up a few men too... but that's the easy bit.

This is very much a tournament that you don't want to miss... it has all the fixins, and is Olympic Themed with 16 competitive 'Olympic Games' jammed into the schedule and a Greek God dream of a TOGA party!!!

It's on August 18-19 in the Gold Coast, and is not to be missed.

QUDA Confirms Queensland Women's Fun Hat - Saturday 3 March

QUDA has announced the Queensland Women's Fun Hat will be held on Saturday 3 March, from 9am-5pm, at the Griffith University Sports Fields, off Kessels Rd , Nathan.

The cost of the day is $20, and this includes fields, insurance, lunch and prizes. The fee also includes joining the menfolk (who'll be playing on the field next door) at the party on Saturday night, as well as BBQ lunch if you want to watch the Open Final on Sunday afternoon.

The event is aimed at Queensland Women Ultimate players of all levels – from people having their first ever go, through to Australian representatives. QUDA’s objective is to ensure everyone attending has a great day, and over time to grow the Queensland Women’s Ultimate scene. The event replaces the Women's Division of Northern Regionals. We anticipate running the Fun Hat for a few years until demand for qualification to Women's Nationals grows beyond two teams.

There is no better way to get new women involved and to improve women’s skills in Ultimate (which is often played in the mixed format) than to play a women’s-only event.

QUDA’s investment in the event includes:
- subsidising the player fee down to $20, to make it attractive to as many players as possible;
- supporting several women from North Queensland flying down to play the event - yay, new ladies!

QUDA hopes that all experienced Brisbane Women players will join us in growing the scene, welcoming our female guests from Townsville, Cairns, the Gold Coast and Gympie, and having a great time!

What I know about Women

During a Heroes bye in the BPL season, I completed a recon mission to Oakman park to check out the talent over there (and to throw with Jmac and Carl). The Women's League (WUFL) seemed to be an environment where any woman could come and improve their game with the likes of Kailtin, Sandra, Suze, Jo, Soph, Gio etc.

Teams looked pretty evenly balanced. The four teams were lead by:

Jo Ashdown - Wonder Women (Green)
Kaitlin Richards - Supertramp (Yellow)
Moulin Rouge - Giordana Rock (Red)
Titanium Nachos - Gemma Sherridan (Grey)

In the previous season, Wonder Woman was a creation of Robyn Dowley's, representing the Heroes club with some handy pickups (Sandra). This team finished 4th. All the teams made the semi's and they won 2 games in a row to take the premiership.

This season, a different looking Wonder Women team secured their place in a 1-week final series (1vs2) with Supertramp.

Kaitlin made the following statement in the lead-up to the big night:


Wonder women are out to fluke a grand final win again this season. Although based on results during round robin games it might be a little less flukey.

Supertramp will outclass their opponents before they even step onto the field with their 70's inspired cheers and supre inspired kit.

A bias pick would be Supertramp and an unbiased would be Supertramp.

All in all there will be no fiddle playing just some good fricking frisbee.

From all reports, it was the casual attitude of Sandra and Suze, suppliers of fine cidar, and the cidar education of Lauren Hutton that helped Wonder Women toward a second victory, disposing of the Tramps in fashion, 15-6. Yes, many a brew was shared throughout the season, and Lauren has been misquoted to have said "I drank a whole beer on the way from the car to the field".

That's all I know about women.

Women of Brisbane Ultimate - UNITE!

With over 100 women currently playing Monday night Mixed, plus plenty of recruitment at the Universities this semester, things are looking very good for the upcoming season of the Women's Ultimate Frisbee League (WUFL), particularly with the firm move to THURSDAY NIGHT (Tuesday nights always made backing up from Monday very hard).

Here's the rundown from League Directors Anna and Aurel:

Saturday Madness - Disc Golf Wins!?

We here at the stately mansion are once again stretched in all directions, and no more so than this Saturday where there are three entirely separate opportunities for flying disc fun.

The Australian Beach Ultimate Squad are having their training camp at Coolangatta all weekend. This is their last time together before departing overseas to battle on the sands of Italy for gritty barefoot glory! The squad will be set up on Coolangatta beach, close to the corner of Warner St and Marine Pde 10am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday. They're looking for people to play against each afternoon from about 2pm.

Of course if that doesn't appeal, Dusty-and-aL-speed beach Ultimate is on as usual, from 10am Saturday morning at Palm Beach.

Meanwhile, sisters are doing it for themselves with the second SatHATaday session at New Farm Park from 2-4pm.

But perhaps most excitingly, this weekend sees the Queensland Disc Golf Championships, and for those who don't lurk on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/quda-discgolf/, let us tell ya, its firing up in a manner almost comparable to the Tour de France (well, not really, but this will be the most exciting weekend of disc golf in Queensland ever!)

Summer at the Oakman Park

With the winter sports ending, Ultimate is getting more space over at Oakman Park, Toowong (corner of Moggill Road and Union St).

Oakman Park is managed by the excellent Wests Juniors AFL Club, and has been the home of Women's Ultimate on Tuesday nights.

Wests Juniors have been very generous in their management of the field, providing it to many other groups including cricket, gaelic football, schools and of course, Ultimate! So if you ever see the owners at the field, give them a pat on the back, and of course let's always do our best to be the best possible users of the field, particularly by leaving it better than we find it!

Women's League on Thursdays
As you may have heard, Women's Ultimate is now moving permanently to Thursday nights at Oakman (ie through Summer and into next Winter), with the new season starting in two weeks on 9 September. The League is for all ladies, from beginners through to international reps.

Mixed Pickup and Training Night on Wednesdays
One new thing is that Wests have offered us use of the park on Wednesday nights through Summer, with the strong possibility of our continuing through into Winter 2011.

Initially, BUDA is arranging for pick up games to be played, but if the number of regulars grow, hopefully a formal league might get established. For the moment, pickup is $5 per player, to be paid on the night.

At present, Wednesday at Oakman an option for any Ultimate Club who wants a regular training venue as well (price to be negotiated).

So all players are welcome, starting from Wednesday 1 September from 7-9pm. As with all pickup games, bring a white shirt, a black/dark shirt, disc, water and your friends!

Sunday Afternoon Pickup
Sunday pickup moves to Oakman Park as of this Sunday 29 August, and will hopefully run through there every Sunday until next February. Pickup also features training sessions with the very friendly and open to anyone Heroes Ultimate Club.

As with all pickup games, bring a white shirt, a black/dark shirt, hat, disc, water and your friends!

Top 10 of 2009 Part 1

Well, its that time of year when we in stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion like to roast a few chestnuts over the fire while turning the air conditioning up full boar, and contemplate the year that was. Of course, the rain has been handy too. Last year we stumbled upon the handy number 10 as the tally of big events for 2008, and we figure we might as well do the same this year.

So here's part 1 of the Top 10 most interesting things that happened in 2009 that we barely otherwise covered here at the Brisbane Ultimate Blog.

10. Matt Boevink Strikes Back

Former QUDA President (2003-2005) Mr Matt Boevink gave everyone one of his ‘well, why the hell not’ smiles at the Association’s AGM in March 2009, stepping back into the toughest job in Queensland Ultimate, and heralding the next phase in the overarching administration of Ultimate and Disc Golf in Queensland. 2009 was another big year for QUDA.

9. The Crawford Report

If you’re a policy wonk like those of us who hang out in the massive library and research labs here at stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion, then you’ll have read the Crawford Report from cover to cover and be excited about what this could mean for the future of Ultimate. But you’re probably not. Nonetheless, we’re slotting this one in, so that if we look back in a few years time, if the future goes as it might, you’ll be able to look back here and say we had it right.

8. Passion Bounced

Its hard to avoid passing judgement, particularly on the friendly Brisbane Ultimate Blog, but its hard to go past tipping the scandal of the Brisbane Ultimate year being the UQ Passion’s disqualification from playing in the BPL Season 1 Finals. Passion’s failure to fill in enough roster sheets to qualify any of its players to play in the Finals series led League Director Stu to forfeit them and invite 5^th place Old School Buggers to play in their stead against 1^st place Dojo Mojo. Many felt this against the spirit of the BPL, which emphasises competitive play over ‘off-field rule mongering’, and were disappointed that if roster sheet-filling were of such importance then it could’ve monitored it during the season and had a quiet word passed on pointing out that Passion would be in breach of the rules. On the other hand, compliance with the agreed rules is also central to spirit of the game, and reams of email saw Stu stick to his guns and point out that the rostering rules were well known to everyone as an important part of ensuring the integrity of the Brisbane Premier League.

The year seemed to go further downhill for the Passion from there – their leadership’s apparent rigging of the BPL Season 1 Most Valuable Player voting (begun much earlier in the year) may have been meant to be a silly prank (no slander to Tomsteve Daley though, who did have a great year on the field in 2009), but in the context of what had gone before, seemed to make the team lose what sympathy they had. An effort at a new start and new look for Season 2 sadly saw the team burning some bridges with the folks at QUDA by taking forever to repay a loan to buy shirts, and the season ended with them missing the Semis again. Passion reps have ignored an invitation to visit the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion for interview (it is exam time though), but perhaps the New Year will bring a new vibe and a new Passion.

7. JFOG and QUDA Storage, Signage at AJSC

As usual, there were all sorts of adventures with fields this year (let us not speak of the AJSC lights), but a few standout moves this year were the putting up of some signage at AJSC, and gaining some permanent storage (and regular tournament use) of the JF O'Grady Fields in nearby Fairfield.

6. Women Break Out

Some people may not have notice it, but 2009 was a big year for Women’s Ultimate in Brisbane, at least in terms of the turnout to Northern Regionals. For the first time, Northern Regionals had a real women’s division (previously involvement had mostly involved two squads of Sultry ladies having a hit out), with four teams battling up and down the JF O’Grady fields. Can this be matched next year, despite the and will these numbers of tournament ladies

It’s worth noting that while the Open Division at Northern Regionals featured only five teams (down from six the previous year), these were five bigger and better teams, leading to a much more challenging and entertaining event for the lads.

The next season of WUFL starts Tuesday the 6th of October, right after Women's Month wraps up.


This season will be a short one only 5 weeks long in order to finish before uni exams.

WUFL-ing to a climate

We received a notification from the wonderful Laura Keating recently on beautiful pink paper with exquisite calligraphy proclaiming a message of peace and offering us a gesture of kindness by inviting us to the WUFL season 2 grand final to be played this Tuesday night. The message stated we could bring a friend if you like, so we would like all of you to accompany us to the game and cheer on the best double-X chromosomed Ultimate players Brisbane has to offer. The note went something like this:

Hello Frisbee Folk,

WUFL season 2 is coming to an end this Tuesday, so come and check out the final.
This season we have Mellow Black defending their title against UQ Rocks. The teams are 1 and 1 this season and are ready to right it out in the final.
There will also be a BBQ and Beers for all our supporters.

Bits O Bloggin' Business

Just a few bits and pieces today.

ITEM: Reckless, one of Brisbane's new women's clubs, have launched their funky new blog thanks to the efforts of one Super-Megzz. More on the evolving women's scene soon.

Reckless have already started regular training sessions, on Wednesday nights at 7pm at Toowong's Oakman Park.

ITEM: Gold Coast Ultimate continues to go from strength to strength, launching their new website, in between counting down the hours until the big Slamtown Invitational Tournament, which looks like featuring 10 very attractive teams. Now, what do we have to do to see a proper Townsville Ultimate site?

ITEM: Nathan League doubled in size in just two weeks, with a full game getting on on those sweet sweet green and well lit Griffith fields. Four newbies were there, with promises of them bringing more friends, so lets hope the seed is well and truly planted. Alas, with State of Origin in Brisbane next week, the decision was made to cancel the session planned for 24 June, but we'll be back with hopefully more two weeks from now.

ITEM: We've been slowly digging through the QUDA archives in recent weeks, and its turning into a bit of a Robert Langdon adventure. We'll hopefully be posting a few treats in the coming weeks, once we rinse the dust off.

Into the Valley of Ultimate, Rode the Six Hundred

We almost missed it, but following the Townsville Hat on the weekend, the number of QUDA members edged over 600 on the weekend.

There's currently 607 people with a Queensland postcode who have registered on the AFDA website (and paid) for a tournament or league that's been held in the last 6 months.

Groovy eh?

Around 472 are in the greater Brisbane area (postcodes 4000-4199 and 4300-4399), 67 on the Gold Coast (4200-4299), 16 'in between' (postcodes 4300-4799), 32 in Townsville (postcodes 4800-@4869) and 21 in Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands (4880+ - the latter are mostly temporary UQ international students who attended the Mission Beach tournament a few weeks ago).

242 are Women and 365 are Men.

The most common postcode was 4067 (St Lucia), followed by 4068 (Indooroopilly/Taringa). Only one Ultimate player is known to live in Kingaroy, but she's in love with another man.

The most popular ladies name to yell when you're throwing some random crap is "Catch it Emma", as eight Queenslanders will respond - or try the 8 Sarah/Saras.

For guys, aim for one of the 12 Matt/Matthews, 11 Ryans or 10 Dave/Davids. Calling "Catch it Dustin" will of course only return a single lazy grin.

There are 3 Stefans, 3 Stephens, 2 Steves and 1 Stephanie. Only two Jason's.

There is only one Tony Ross, but this is a well known fact.

Ignoring those birthdates that are obviously wrong (mostly people using 'todays date' rather than their birth date), the youngest current member is 14 year old Ollie (son of Tony). GO OLLIE!
