Cancellation Blues
So alas, Bashionals 2010, proudly brought to you by the Brisbane Ultimate Blog, has been cancelled.
Of the 10 teams that played Regionals but didn't qualify for Nationals, only one demonstrated its keen-ness by paying the small deposit by the due date. Three other teams had expressed an interest. Two had said they couldn't make it. Four others didn't show any interest.
Meanwhile, Chilly have also cancelled the proposed 2010 Border Classic.
Maybe people don't want tournaments?
We shall test this on a local scale soon ... be prepared for both shining light and blackest night.

Congratulations, Bashionals Qualifiers!
By virtue of not qualifying for Open Nationals, the following lucky teams have qualified for Bashionals!
East: Hills; Newcastle B
South (to be finalised): Chilly B; Bad Apples; QFC ; Gfuc
West: FEAR; Happy Pig
North: Townsville; UQ Ultimate Lovers; Some sort of Barbarian mutant local team
Of course, if you didn't play Regionals, or don't feel like Nationals (hello Fyshwick B), you're still welcome to put together a team to contest Bashionals. We pride ourselves in a much simpler qualification route than Nationals, after all.
Send in your team deposit by the end of the week - if we have six confirmed teams, Bashionals is on!

Bashionals 2010 Update #1
Over the next two weeks, many teams will be going to Regionals, and if they aren't successful in qualifying for Nationals, deciding if they'd like to play the fab new event, Bashionals. Details at the bottom of this email.
Teams wanting to play Bashionals 2010 (17-18 April in Brisbane) will need to send a $150 team deposit by Friday 19 March (the Friday after Regionals).
If we have received 6 deposits by this date, then Bashionals will go ahead - we need 6 teams to commit so that people can start booking flights etc. We have space for up to 12 teams.
It is anticipated that after team deposits have been paid, the player fee will be approximately $35. This will depend a bit on the number of teams regoed, and there will be some consultation with Captains as to the details of the event (eg if all the Captains want a Bashionals disc, then we'll get one and raise the fees to something like $50).
For the "mid-range" players out there, with all the "top-range" players off worrying about boring-old-traditional Nationals, Bashionals may well be your big chance to make a splash on the Australian stage and bring home some bling! So fire up!

Bashionals 2010 is Booked
We in Brisbane are pleased to let you all know that the fields are booked for the inaugural Bashionals tournament, to be held on 17-18 April 2010 (the weekend before Nationals)!
Why are you doing this?
With an increasing number of teams now making a run at Regionals but missing out on a trip to Nationals, we're excited to offer a second event to build your season around. In 2009, around 27 Open teams played Regionals, competed for 16 Nationals spots, and many folks had their season over in March after a handful of games. Bashionals is here to help!
What's Bashionals again?
Bashionals = B-Nationals, but with much more fun and Ultimate that's just as competitive. Moreso perhaps, because the teams will be much more of a similar level of skill and talent.
Why should I consider Bashionals?
More excitingly than Nationals, the field at Bashionals will likely be wide open. And better than Regionals, teams are likely to be of a similar level of talent, skill and depth. The winner of the inaugural B-Nationals event could indeed be YOU and will no doubt be held in high esteem!
Plus, Brisbane is a fine spot to come and play some Ultimate at. We'd love to have you visit.
Who can come?
The tournament is open to any team that isn't going to Nationals 2010. We will consider requests from any individual Nationals-bound player who wants to play in support of non-Nats team - eg a senior player or two leading/coaching/organising a developing or new team or club.
How will you confirm who's coming?
Invitations will be further sent out immediately after Regionals results are reported, with team deposits due by Friday 19 March. Bashionals will go ahead if at least six Open teams commit to playing, and confirmation will be made by Monday 22 March to allow people to plan etc.
We are also willing to run a Women's division if four teams are interested.

But I'm such a good player that I'll never be going to Bashionals!
We would also ask experienced/elite Nationals-bound players to get behind promoting Bashionals in your local area. The sorts of players who'll benefit from going to Bashionals rely on your support, encouragement and leadership. Your region or club's "B" team (and "C" team, and local league players) need you to get them going that step further than just 'making up the numbers' at your local Regionals - this is how you convert them into A team players! And of course, maybe one day you'll find yourself coming to Bashionals too!
What's this about a trophy?
Finally, there will be a sweet and perpetual trophy presented to the winners by the very important Secretary of the AFDA and the also very important President of QUDA - so yeah its serious and good!
Looking forward to it. More info as we get closer to the event, but we wanted to get everything onto everyone's season planning.

Bashionals 2010?
So there's a couple of people considering hosting Bashionals 2010 here in Brisbane, and its being slotted onto the tentative Queensland tournament calendar for the coming year.
What's Bashionals? I think this is a Simon Talbot idea originally. It's B-Nationals.
With the introduction of Regionals in 2005 and the ongoing growth of Ultimate, there are an increasing number of teams that get together to play Regionals, but then don't qualify for Nationals (sometimes they're gutted to miss out, other times they were happy just for a run around with the boys at Regionals).
So the main part of idea is to put on a tournament for these teams - so there' s something more to the season. If you're a middling Ultimate player and/or on a middling team, you can start the season in the lead up to Regionals knowing that if you do well then you're off to Nationals, and if maybe not so well then you've still got Bashionals to fire up for.
Of course, we're primarily looking at Open teams here - at present it seems that the size of the Women's division at Nationals fits the demand pretty well (although we're open to suggestions otherwise).
The availability of the JFOG fields, plus the new convenience of having all the QUDA gear there, as well as the general attractiveness of the Brisbane climate, and the high ratio of Open teams playing Regionals without a corresponding number of Nationals slots for the North region, making hosting Bashionals here a bit of a no brainer (particularly with Nats in Adelaide).
A particular aim is to make Bashionals a great tournament of itself. Unlike Nationals which is dominated by a few favourites - it's likely that nobody will have any idea who will win Bashionals. There'll be a lot of unknowns amongst the teams, and with a lot of the big boys (and egos) of at Nationals, the event is sure to have an excellent vibe. Off the field, we'll be commiting to a particularly special party. We think we'll be asking the AFDA to donate a sizable trophy, and recognise the Bashionals champion as a pretty good team worthy of historical record.
All this is still tentative. We're putting this out there to see if people think this is a good idea, and will be writing to those teams and clubs that didn't make it to Nationals last year (as well as those in the bottom half of the Nats pile). If we think we have six teams who are keen, then it'll be on. But start thinking about it anyways.
