Time to Respect the Pallen

So lots of Brisbane-based players went to the World Clubs tournament over in Prague. Fergs is even coming home with a bronze medal around his neck, as is Long-reach Truter (sounds like a porn name).

For those stuck at home, the WFDF scores page gives lots the goals and assists stats for every player in the tournament.

When you look through them all, the standouts on the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog's detailed analytical overhead projector are those three lads from Brisbane who were on the Redbacks.

Now, the Redbacks had a tough week, with amongst the worst for and against results. Just one win, and that was 17-15 over the team that eventually came last.

Note - its nonetheless great that they've gone and played. International Ultimate is great fun and you never regret it.

Anyway, looking at the stats, the Redbacks scored 84 times over 10 games. Our George threw 5 scores and caught a further 12. Our Gref threw 16 scores and caught a further 8 (and missed a game). And our Pete threw 26 scores and caught a further 10 goals.

That's 76 goals that our three Brisbane lads were involved in, out of a total of 84. Yep, over 90%. Well done lads - the Redbacks must've been happy to have you.

And Pete Allen - yep, he in 42% of the scoring the team did. I can't be arsed checking the other Brisbane players on other teams but nobody else seems to have stood out like this, and of course he was probably hopeless on D or may have hucked it every time he got it or something (just so you know the overhead projector isn't foolproof in its analysis), so please don't take the stats analysis too seriously (and maybe this is just a reminder that the stats in Ultimate don't tell you much as yet).

But, under what we may as well call the "Jangles Principle" (known nationally as the "jd principle"), Pete Allen is clearly Brisbane's Most Valuable Player (if you're going to an international tournament anyway), and deserving of much more respect than he usually gets (we just have to stop paying attention to his off-field antics).

Hail to the Pete!

Great stuff Pistol Pete - the biggest nerd in frisbee.

Id like to know why Gref missed a game? Something tells me theres a story there...

Who compiled all these stats? Was there an official on the sideline for each game? Was Pete the captain and just filled out the stats book at the end as he could remember it? I need answers.

I believe each game at World Clubs had two officials who kept time and collated stats. This has been the format over the last few years of WFDF events.

I think your maths is wrong!

If redbacks scored 84 times, that means 84 assists and 84 scores. Making 168 possibles. The Qld lads hit 76 of those being 45%.

Still a decent contribution though.

Gref missed two games actually on the second last day.

He came down with a flu like sickness. He carried the illness the entire tourny but day 5 was a bit too much for him to deal with.

The QLD players contributed a lot to the team and helped that they had played a lot together so hit a lot of connections.

Gref was a primary handler and Peter was a primary receiver and was great on the ups! Often receiving in the endzone or just short of the end zone which resulted in a lot of scores / assists for those two.

Although was a top week with the team just suffering from inconsistent form.

Best moment would be point Pissy scored. Timeout before the point to set up the play, two passes to just short of endzone for a second time out to reset the play (and let pissy catch up) for a perfect Moses with Talbot taking the disc from the middle of the stack.

The hungarians (the opposition) loved it as did the Redbacks who stormed the field!

-Shhh, this whole schooling people thing only works from under the radar.
-I'm not a nerd damnit.
-JdR is correct, there were 2 officials at each game timing and keeping the stats and scores.
-So that stats say one thing, but you are right in that my D was not as good as it was earlier in the year until the last 2 days.

-Gref missed day 5 for 2 games, he was sick, we believe with a bug I accidentally gave to him, he didn't seem to have it the whole time and I had just recovered from it on day 5. He may not have as many stats but he was AT LEAST equally influential, and was much more obvious apparently, getting most of the after game mvps from the opposing teams. (stupid yellow boots :P) and we have some pretty sweet photos of him laying out.

- I agree with Stafa, the 2 highlights were winning the redbacks their first game, but Pissy's single stat was sooo so much more sweet. I'll remember that one for many years. probably tell my grandchildren :P I believe it is on video? Glenn hodges?

-and yeah thanks mikey, that core-skills-test lunch break ultimate goes along way :P
