Roster Me This, Batfink!

So a few weeks back we contemplated some shuffling amongst the BPL teams between Season 1 2010 and Season 2 2010.

With the Draft mini-League underway (we'll blame our lack of coverage on aL - see how much we all appreciate the next day's emails from Stu!) folks are bumping hips with some different guys and considering their options for next season.

Of course, the overiding news has been the merger of the champion Passion squad with also-rans the Lovers to form a single UQ front ... and bring the League back down to six teams. Now, two teams into one don't quite go, so astute Captains will be looking over past UQ rosters to see who got cut - knowing that those guys will be fired up and ready to stick it to the man next season. Anyway, we may as well tip the totally stacked and newly renamed UQ Elbows* to win next season.

Meanwhile, word in the Hall of Justice is that after their tough first season, the Heroes will be desperate for numbers - and frankly, some BPL-experienced numbers at that. Of course, UQ will have no choice to forward any newly arriving second semester North American guns their way as they're already full.

The Buggers, Cobras and Dojos apparently expect to field their usual gangs, with only a couple of changes here and there.

Rosters are slowly being registered over here.

*Elbows - half way between the fist and the heart.

I dont think youre giving enough credit to the Buggers. A "couple of changes here and there" doesnt really give justice to some quality pick ups in Oscar and Chady, plus of course that great man - Buzz Burwell.

I'll say what I reckon everyone's thinking but which I havent yet seen written in the Brisbane frisbee blogosphere. Buzz to Mike is the new J-Ray to Mike. Will be a very effective bailout whenever they get into a tough spot and will be very hard to beat. Buggers favourites for next season in my opinion.

Gonna be interesting to see how Cobras cope without Dan - whether they can recruit another tall or just go without.

Expect some big improvement from SFC as well.

Can't wait for next season!

This is a terrible step backwards for the BPL. Season 1 was very even, with six of seven teams close to making the semis (and the Heroes showing great improvement over the season). Season 1 also featured a lot of players, and room to add more players.

Instead, the talent will be skewed. Season 2 will see two gun teams (the new UQ and the Buggers+Buzz+lots of Mike), two staying about the same so now only in with a chance (Dojo and Cobras) and two also-rans in the Heroes and SFC that sadly few quality players will be interested in joining - and hence they can only rely on trying to bring rookies through.

UQ now seems to have totally given up on trying to bring players through from the UQ League.

Indeed, with the shrink in teams, expect very few rookies this season (if anyone has some time, I'd love to see someone doing some stats on this).

An unfortunate let-down by the League leadership (by this I mean the 15% of senior players - NOT the League Director or Captains per se - who are doing a great job in the mechanics of the League).

What are the chances of 8 teams being the goal for 2011? A way to do it is to limit roster sizes and/or have a rookie minimum. Or all new players or players changing teams occuring through a central mechanism. Or something other than 'random chance'.

Or will again the short-term self-interest of the top few in a Nationals year trump any long-term effort to make BPL better?

I wouldn't right of heros completely. If we can secure a couple experienced players then i believe we can match it for legs and enthusiasum.

As teams have found by the end of the season Heroes were "no also runs", However that second win remained just out of reach.

Wow - that is one of the biggest comments ever on the BUB ... and sadly anonymous.

Perhaps the next team to enter the BPL can be called Anonymous.

I should say again (as we need to every once in a while), the BUB policy is that anonymous posts are ok (so long as they aren't trolly and rude) - but of course, putting your name out there is nicer and much more likely to get your comment responded too/treated with respect.

To say that adding buzz to the bugs makes it unwinnable for 4 of the 6 teams seems like a lazy way of saying to not expect any improvement from said teams.
Buzz has played for 20 years and veterans should get a run wherever they are invited.
Effort is best spent applying tactics to combat such experienced elements and learn something whilst doing so.

I'm not sure heroes will be playing BPL unless we get those "few experienced players" Jangles is talking about. As far as I know, we currently don't have numbers for a team and are very short on experience.

With the way that Heroes have set up their team I'm not sure if "experienced" players are altruistic enough to go and play for them, they already have 11 players with Jangles being the only experienced player in there.

UQ have cut down from 23 players to 14 this season, I'm not sure what the other 9 players are planning but talking to one last night, he said he wasn't planning on playing aqt all this season!

I would suggest the Heroes speak to a number of players as a package rather than trying to attract players individually, this may require them having to cut some of their own. That all being said, Heroes may be quite happy working things out for themselves and developing their own players, they have a coach and training sessions so why not.

SFC are unlikely to swap any players in the off season as they are a geographic team based miles away. But they have still got the most potential and biggest player base in the league, this should be the team that improves every season, making semi's this season would be a good goal for the men in orange, and looking at finals next year, especially if they go to nationals.

Just for interests sake my maths puts would have it that at least 9 of those UQ players rostered originally learned to play at a UQ league of some sort..
