Know Your BPL Finals History

Since the BPL or Brisbane Premier League emerged from the MAL/Dog Cup, there have been 11 seasons and 11 grand finals.

BPL I (summer 2005) - Whippett Good (15) def Dojo Mojo (13)
BPL II (winter 2006) - Whippett Good (15) def Moreton Bay Buggers (11)
BPL III (spring 2006) - Moreton Bay Buggers (13) def Ultimate Lovers (10)
BPL Mini (summer 2006) - Moreton Bay Buggers def Dojo Mojo
BPL 2007 S 1 (autumn 2007) - Ultimate Lovers (12) def Moreton Bay Buggers (10)
BPL 2007 S 2 (winter 2007) - Moreton Bay Buggers (11) def Ultimate Lovers (10)
BPL 2007 S 3 (spring 2007) - Crusty Buggers (15) def Dojo Mojo (10)
BPL 2008 S 1 (autumn 2008) - Messy Buggers (16) def UQ Passion (12)

BPL 2009 S 1 (autumn 2009) - Messy Buggers (14) def Dojo Mojo (11)

In the BPL era:

- A team from the Moreton Bay Buggers club has played the last 10 finals in a row, winning 7 of them.

- The UQ club has featured in 6 of the last 9 finals, winning twice (it also lost both its two MAL finals appearances).

- Dojo Mojo has lost the three BPL finals it has appeared in (although it picked up a win over UQ in the MAL days of 2004)

- Whippet Good won two finals in its three seasons in the BPL.

- Rawhide didn't make a finals appearance in its four seasons (coming closest in losing a semi by a point in BPL 2007 S3).

I meant to include this in the main post, but maybe its better to trigger a few comments.

Its interesting that very few of these finals have been close - with the final score within 1 or 2 points.

The last five finals have been at least solid wins/losses.

Any theories as to why this is?

2 reasons:

1. Invariably, and you see this in other sports, one team shows up ready to play, the other doesn't.

2. At least for the last few finals, the final week has been delayed, which means that teams are often missing a few players come grand final time. Whichever one isn't missing their main players tend sto win by a considerable margin.

3. I would say a lot of mens ultimate doesn't have many close games, because it is a huck fest. Sometimes that doesn't always work for teams, and because they don't have back up plans, they tend to lose badly.

I obviously meant to say 3 reasons.

I would have to agree with anonymous's point 2. I know that in this recent final Dojo had a full compliment during the semi final (meant to be grand final week) and last season Messy would have a had a full compliment in the week that the final was rained off, but instead had to play with only 6 of their players and pick up 1 player and play savage for the final.

Probably also worth noting that, while Buggers and UQ have had 2 teams for the past couple of years, no club has yet managed to have both of its teams in the GF.

Hmmm, I remember winning those 2 finals against the buggers that they have lost in the last 9 seasons, but I have no recollection of losing that one...my memory obviously blocked it out for some reason.
