Brisbane Indoor Ultimate Championships - the Rules Debates

So as we get closer to the Brisbane Indoor Ultimate Championships (has your team registered yet?), we're starting to think about what rules to use.

Most folks in Brisbane aren't terribly familiar with the Indoor Ultimate game (although those that are seem pretty hard core in terms of the way they like to see the game played).

There's a few simple ones, like the stall count being 7 rather than 10. Foot blocks (attempted as well as successful) are called as fouls (this is for safety). If the disc hits something (wall, roof, spectator), the disc is out-of-bounds and called a turnover. These will be sorted and everyone brought up to date at the event.

Because there will be a lot of people unfamiliar to indoor Ultimate, and we're playing through an afternoon, we will not be playing "continuous", which is common in some places. There will be 60 seconds between scoring and that team then pulling.

But two things we invite views on are a) what to use as the endzones, and b) how many players on the Court.

Regarding endzones, options include:
- the basketball "key" (the four-sided trapezium) - small area marked with lines
- the basketball 3-point line (semi-circle) - larger area marked with lines
- usual Ultimate endzone (rectangle) - marked with cones

(I'm not so keen as to put down tape to mark an endzone line, as some might suggest).

In Canberra during its indoor season, the semi-circle is usually used, but overseas, I understand its more common to use cones.

Regarding numbers on the court, I'm currently going with teams having a maximum of 8 players all together, but options include:
- 4 (2/2 gender split)
- 4 (any gender split, receiver calls)
- 5 (3/2 gender split, receiver calls)
- 5 (any gender split, receiver calls)

Comment lines are open, or get onto your Captain, as they will be surveyed soon.

I think use cones (we are used to it at BPL, BUML, WUFL etc.) and have 5 people on at a time, 3/2 gender split, offence decides.

Maybe increase the roster size to 9 if it is going to be 5 on the court at a time? What do others think?

I've had the roster size increase suggested if we have 5 on the court, but I think keeping it to 8 (with the implication that its wisest to have four guys and four gals) encourages alternation between having three guys or three girls on (or at least, adds that strategic element).

Some teams are telling me that they intend to bring less than 8 players, because they want lots of court time. That's cool, but they'll want to keep the potential for injury in mind.

Still open on that if the Captains want that though.

Whats the safety issue with footblocks?

Not continuous????
What is the go with that?

I would seriously suggest/request/plead that this is changed... indoor should be continuous... that's the way it's played.

And I agree with Julz... what's the issue with footblocks? Why are they less safe indoors, as opposed to wearing cleats like we usually do?

I fully agree with J-Mac... 'speed point', or 'continuous' is essential for the indoor game.

That said, 3:2... and the gender strength of that ratio can only switch at half time... only two pulls.

And proper endzones.

My 2 cents.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do substitutes work with continuous? Is it similar to the new junior rules where you have to sub through a gate of some sort?

What indoor game are you guys talking about? No foot blocks, weird shaped endzones, continues play, 4 a side. WTF?

hey wettie,
it's a sub 'on the fly' system, similar to the wonderful sport of ice hockey... usually a bit safer to be done while on offence...
As for at the gate... well there is no actual gate (not sure what these juniors are up to) but it's generally a high five at the midfield sideline. Gangstas use fist pounds rather than high fives.

Thanks commenters - very fruitful. These issues are being discussed with Captains and we'll hopefully see resolution in the next week or so.
