Happy new year to all from the BUB mansion. We spent the holidays planning for some renovations. With Holidays comes expanding waistlines, killer hangovers and the livers ready to pack up. If your New Years resolution is to play more ultimate then we at the BUB will try to help. Here is what is going on in the Brisbane ultimate community this January.
Nationals Season is here
Firestorm, Black Betty and Slamtown are all underway with their seasons. Firestorm and Betty have been doing Preseason training to varying results. Even the mayor has been out recruiting for Slamtown to put in a good run at northerns and on to nationals.
If you are keen to take the step up firestorm sessions are open to all experienced men who are willing to train hard with the aim of attending and winning nationals.

Under 23s selection Camp
We wish good luck to all the Brisbane players heading down to the camp on the 5-6th of Jan. These include Jack Allen, Timocles, Chris Davis, Ryan Garrahy, Trev, Myles, Reece, Sophie and Dom. Apologies if I have missed anyone.
Brisbane Indoor League
There is still time to get your teams registered for the Brisbane Indoor League. Running on Thursday nights in the Howell indoor sports center at Grammar.

Beach Ultimate
There is nothing more satisfying than a good day of beach ultimate. However there isn't much beach going around at the moment. Will there be Australia Day Beach Championship this year?

Summer at the Oakman Park
With the winter sports ending, Ultimate is getting more space over at Oakman Park, Toowong (corner of Moggill Road and Union St).
Oakman Park is managed by the excellent Wests Juniors AFL Club, and has been the home of Women's Ultimate on Tuesday nights.
Wests Juniors have been very generous in their management of the field, providing it to many other groups including cricket, gaelic football, schools and of course, Ultimate! So if you ever see the owners at the field, give them a pat on the back, and of course let's always do our best to be the best possible users of the field, particularly by leaving it better than we find it!
Women's League on Thursdays
As you may have heard, Women's Ultimate is now moving permanently to Thursday nights at Oakman (ie through Summer and into next Winter), with the new season starting in two weeks on 9 September. The League is for all ladies, from beginners through to international reps.
When: Thursdays 7-9pm, September 9th - November 4th

Mixed Pickup and Training Night on Wednesdays
One new thing is that Wests have offered us use of the park on Wednesday nights through Summer, with the strong possibility of our continuing through into Winter 2011.
Initially, BUDA is arranging for pick up games to be played, but if the number of regulars grow, hopefully a formal league might get established. For the moment, pickup is $5 per player, to be paid on the night.
At present, Wednesday at Oakman an option for any Ultimate Club who wants a regular training venue as well (price to be negotiated).
So all players are welcome, starting from Wednesday 1 September from 7-9pm. As with all pickup games, bring a white shirt, a black/dark shirt, disc, water and your friends!
Sunday Afternoon Pickup
Sunday pickup moves to Oakman Park as of this Sunday 29 August, and will hopefully run through there every Sunday until next February. Pickup also features training sessions with the very friendly and open to anyone Heroes Ultimate Club.
As with all pickup games, bring a white shirt, a black/dark shirt, hat, disc, water and your friends!

Sunday Pickup Has Moved
Sunday afternoon pickup is moving from the northside to Toowong as of this weekend.
Remember, pickup is a great casual way to introduce new people to Ultimate.
When:
3:00pm Throwing and some drills (optional)
3:45pm Game starts and play until dusk.
Where:
Toowong Memorial Park, 65 Sylvan Road, Toowong (many will know the Regatta Hotel on the corner of Sylvan Road and Coronation Dr on the river). Lots of buses nearby, as well as Auchenflower and Toowong railway stations.
Bring:
Bring a white shirt, a black/dark shirt, hat, running shoes and water.

Back on Green
So yesterday the senior member of the stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog mansion's household decided it was time to get out the cleats, shake off the hot hot summer, and get back onto the Ultimate field, in preparation at least for tonight and this Thursday, and headed on down to Sunday Pickup at Kalinga Park.
In sum, Sunday pickup at Kalinga Park is very cool, and you're a fool to miss out. We were impressed by the number of new players having a crack, and am glad that a future move to a 4pm start may be more attractive to those of us with slightly less sweat available for our bodies to exude. This event will only grow through the year, as the weather gets a bit cooler.
Tonight sees the start of BUML (rego and info), with some pickup at Griffith Nathan AFL Fields (map) (where we've been previously for Regionals 2007 and 2008). Gaining and keeping this venue to a big step for BUML (after the loss of Yeronga due to its being redeveloped into the new QAFL headquarters), so get on down there and have a run. This is the time to bring along your mates for a go, or recruit a few newbies to flesh out your team.
While we're talking BUML - what's the frickin' deal with the 70 people who want to play Division 1 forming themselves into only 5 teams??? Do they love their buddies so much that they want to have a bye every few weeks????? Madness ....
[Edit - its actually next Thursday 25 February for the warm up night!] Thursday sees the warm up night for BPL (you've been down to the Gold Coast blog to check out the second half of their season preview, haven't you?), assuming the lights at AJSC have been repaired as was hoped (otherwise it'll be fitness work in the dark for some teams, for others, it'll be some strategy sessions over at the Greenslopes Bowls Club).
Of course, the forecast for rain this week could stuff it all up!

Sunday Pickup Returns to Kalinga Park
Sunday Pickup is starting this weekend (Sunday 7 February) at Kalinga Park on the Northside of Brisbane.
For those unfamiliar with "pickup" - Ultimate around the world is characterised by semi-organised games made up of random individuals. Pickup is a great way to make new people, have a no-pressure run around, and bring new people down to have a go at Ultimate without their having to commit to a team, pay a league fee, etc etc.
Just remember to bring a white (or light) shirts and a black (or dark) shirt, as with pickup you never know which team you'll be on or needs you the most!
Starts: Sunday 7th February and running weekly after that.
Time: Arrive about 3pm and play through to whenever we want to pack up.
Cost: Free
Bring: Light and Dark Shirts, waterbottle, sunscreen and a frisbee.
