The Splits [Ouch!]

In the tipping, we have Rick with a convincing lead, tipping 8 out of a possible 12 (83%), although his namesake Mike (Nolan Jnr)has 88% in the 3 rounds that he tipped. Huddy has 7 which puts him at 58% and no one else is worth mentioning this week! Pete is no where to be seen. Can't quite figure out that tactic. My tip for this week - Rick, Mike, Jules, Stef: all 2 ;-)

Taunts

Last weekend, the captains of our most prestigious league, the BPL, were invited to the virtual BUB Palace for fine dining, wining and some not-so-friendly banter. Today we bring you a summary of what went down.

The youngest captain in the league started proceedings by declaring that they have become more dynamic than ever before, despite losing some defining players. He warns us of a wave of North American influence coming our way. One can only imagine what this means for spirit scores! (which will be published, by the way).

The mayor came prepared, megaphone in hand and propaganda well laid out. Of course, Stefan's speech is available as a press release. Here are his taunts, word for word:

- The Slamtown Flatball Club is an in your face encounter.  We're out to take your lunch money, and your women.
We pride ourselves on being well rounded individually, while composed and disciplined as a team.
In the offseason we acquired the services of four players, while 3 moved on.
Of our new players, we get Byron Bay youth Issaac Stone, the return of GC veteran Jimmy Larkin, aL Don's moving literally moving onto Palm Beach, and Abra was drawn to the Coastal vibe.  All of our new recruits are awesome, and can provide physically and vocally.  We're as resilient as the pounding tide, and as uncontainable as the beating sun.  Our style's impetus...... our defence impregnable. We will take to the pitch with intent to win every time we play.... and we'll hope that you'll be cheering for us when we're in the big game.

Moreton Bay Bugger's President and Captain, Mike, delivered a conference like presentation, incorporating slides and graphs, proudly boasting of past achievements. Mike was quite uncomfortable with the lack of Grand Final appearances in 2010 (0) and is relying on the return of some stalwarts for the hope of returning to the glory days. It seems that premierships talk. Dojo's absence from this meeting was expected, and a barrage of smack-talk in their direction would be considered the norm. However, after losing the "Chokers" collar last season, they appear to be the team to beat.

Each captain was asked who their team was going to beat in the finals. Mike said "I think the Dojo will probably return... They have a great base of guys who used to play frisbee on their team and now they have more than 2 who currently play frisbee. They will be a little harder to crack than usual."

What does Mike mean by "used to play frisbee" exactly?

Reece is looking forward to beating Dojo in the final as well. He thinks they'll be there because "They have height and their strange ability to never have to dump the disc." Stefan agreed, and added "Those tall bastard proved on Thursday night that they truly can get away with a steady flow of hucks"

Finally, for dessert, the can-of-worms was opened. The captains decided to pile pressure on new LD Graham "Special" Prickett. Stefan and Mike feel it's time to rehash some old issues. Mike wants to see the league go to two-tiers, an idea that this blogger is very interested in. Mike reckons it's about a year away.

Stef is sick of Dutching to Brisbane and back every week. Slamtown are calling for a home game, and the Mayor is serious about organising this, in collaboration with GCU. His campaign is representative of a larger playing area on the Gold Coast and South of the border.

Less Than Five Hours to Go!

Less than five hours to go until the BPL final tonight, and there's no time to post!

We've only been able to talk to a couple of people about the Final, but they've got some wise things to say.

Yesterday we bumped into Dan Strelan on the train: "It's the battle of the walking wounded. Dojo - Fatty's arm, no Cunliffe (rules is rules). UQ - No Gref (whip), Jules ankle. Hopefully Dojo bring their A-game. They will have to work hard on D to shut-down an all-class UQ. The talls are mentioned but a firing BW and hard-working Nathan in the midfield will play a big part. I think the game is in UQ's hands - it will be up to Dojo to snatch it out."

Earlier in the week we dragged Stef away from a pile of schools to receive these insights: "Reckon the Dojo were more dominant this season, but the Lovers have peaked at a better time. Stephen Cameron will need to rally his troops... maybe even hand the reins over to the likes of Pallen or Fatty to ensure it's not a nonchalant affair. Is aL's knee ok?? What about Julians ankle?? For all the speculation about Fatty's hand, the Lovers are dealing with some rusty wheels as well. The Dojo went undefeated against SFC while the Lovers were winless against us. What is Ryan Black really doing next Thurs?? We may have been born at night.... but not last night sensei. There is no way they would be benching a top flight reciever for the finals.... I'll believe what i read on the Dojo blog if I see Ryan there on the night. Go the Dojo."

League Director Stu had of course already posted the following data, which we fearlessly cut and paste: "UQ (in various names) have made the BPL final 7 times; losing 4 of them to MBB, beating MBB twice, and last season beating Cobras in sudden death. Dojo have famously been in 5 finals and lost 4 of them to MBB and one to Whippett Good. Can they beat the choke by beating UQ? Come along to AJSC next Thursday at 7.40pm to find out!"

Queensland - Beautiful One Day, Volunteers the Next

AFDA recently announced its August Volunteer of the Month.

Congratulations to Adilia who was recognised for her work in Brisbane!

Its funny too how the other nominees included Stef on the Gold Coast, and Simon and Mike in Townsville.

The three main Queensland Ultimate cities, all mentioned in one month. Cool.

Group of Unknowns* Checkmate at Halibut 2010

The weekend was such a fantastic Halibut that Monday morning brings a lot of recovery and catching up to do. More reports through the week, but here's a quick skim.

John Doe defeated Byron Ultimate Disc 15-11 in the final. Not sure of the rest of the table - Team Canada and Team Hill Sprints battled out for 3rd place, Townsville came 5th over Barrel of Monkeys.

Heroes won a well deserved Spirit Prize. jd of BUD and Maylin of John Doe took out MVPs. BUD also got the official nod as winning the party.

A fantastic job by TD Stef and his team of volunteers. More reminiscing when we get the chance, and keep an eye out on the Mayor Mansion over at the Gold Coast blog for more announcements (once he's recovered a bit).

Queensland Dominates

Some folks might still be down about the Maroon's loss in last week's State of Origin game, but cheer up with big Stefan Rappazzo, who was named AFDA Volunteer of the Month for July.

This follows fellow Queenslander Sara Cargill who was the AFDA Volunteer of the Month for June!

Slam it down to Slamtown

Upon checking the mail today, we received notification from the GC's most famous Canadian, Stefan "The Stef" Rappazzo, of an upcoming tournament being held on the Gold Coast. In the words of Stefan:

"You're Invited.

Gold Coast Ultimate has been on the rise for the last few years, in that time ultimate has developed at a uni level, a tournament play level, and a city league level. But until now, Gold Coast Ultimate has not had an opportunity to share the fruits of their labour with the surrounding communities.

Slamtown cordially invites you to take part in the Slamtown Invitational.

A two day weekend tournament to be held at Pizzey Park on July 4-5. We have a cap of 10 teams for this the innaugural.

This tournament will be geared towards university development, as we encourage the local, and even interstate uni's to register a team. However, it is not exclusively for Universities. As it is our first tournament to host, we would like to encourage everyone and anyone to send in a team, both to test and develop our university sides, as well as for the love of the game, and all else that the coast offers.

Byron Easter Monday Special Session

If you're south of Brisbane for the Easter break, maybe you'll want to join the Byron (and Gold Coast) gangs for a throw on Monday evening at the usual Byron Ulti-fields - game on from 5pm playing through to 8pmish. It looks like with the Goldie crew heading down there'll be numbers for two games simulaneously.

Brisbane folks will of course be jealous of the wet weather plan - if the fields are closed due to rain then games will be played on the beach! But if you're wise, you'll have gone down for the day.

BPL 2008-3 Round 2 Tipping Results

As you can see, our manipulation of BPL results has finally results in the two residents of the BUB Manor sitting atop the tipping table.
Last round was a very good round for tippers, with only blind Dojo loyalty stopping Sensei and Stefan from joining everyone else on a perfect round.

After This One, I'm Sure Our "Obsession" Will Wear Off

Ever since these photos of a bare-chested injun hunk arrived anonymously in our offices here at stately BUB mansion, we've been wondering what to do with them.

You've seen a few posted already.

But we can't get them out of our heads.

Its getting a bit troubling.

One of the great ways to get over this kind of disturbing obsession, is to just go for it.

Overdose yourself, and hope you survive.

So following on from a fairly common internet meme, here's some fun. And since Stef hasn't been around much lately, there's a bit of him in there too.
