Australia Day Beach Ultimate Championship

A message from this year's TD the one the only "Mayor of Slamtown" Stefan Rappazzo

Hello all,

I've taken the reins of the Australia Day Beach Ultimate Championships (ADBUC)... and tampered with it.

This year.. it will be Surf and Turf..... and it will be in Byron Bay!!!!

Details:

8 Teams, suggested rosters of 10
8 powered campsites (all next to one another) at Belongil Fields (one campsite per team)

Sat - played on turf, 7 on 7 mixed ultimate (4:3) round robin action.
Sun - played on sand, 5 on 5 mixed ultimate (3:2) crossovers, semi's and finals.

Sat night - Genda' Blenda' party  -In homage to 'The Last Gender Blender' in Canada, each team will need to have a theme, a blender drink, a game which partiers play to earn the drink, decorations, and music.  Revellers will cruise from one site to the next until they have had their fill, or found a place to stop.

Sun night - (Mon is public holiday) - Sun night will be out in Byron for team trivia, dinner and drinks at the Buddah Bar, and return to the campsites late night for a campfire (as long as there are no fire restrictions at the time)

$110/player includes, 2xlunch, 2x dinner, 1x breakky, 2 nights accom at campsite, 2 days of ultimate.

Rego is first in best dressed.... until Jan 18... at which point your full team fee needs to be received, or 'next in line' will have the option to trump your bid.

What you'll need to bring: tent and sleeping gear, ultimate gear, BLENDER, table, a creative game to play within the confined of your campsite, table, music player..... whatever else you think will be awesome.

Prizes for:  Best Drink, Best Game, Best Theme, Spirit, MVP on field, MVP at party, trivia, ADBUC championship.

Pair up your drink and game to fit your theme.... think big.

Go.

Milestone for Byron Bay Ultimate

This Friday 10 February, the Byron Bay Regional Council will be opening its new multi-sport centre, which includes a dedicated Ultimate field.

It's great to have a dedicated field, but its also great to be part of a larger centre, and be thereby able to negotiate to host larger events.

If you're down that way, the politicians and other community representatives will be doing their ribbon cutting thing from 11am-12.30pm, and they'll surely love to see some Ultimate players.

Of course, they could hang around for the community launch between 4pm and 8pm that evening, which will feature both the Little Athletics and the very BEST of the Byron Bay Ultimate community and their friends, in a showcase game!

Well done BADMAN and all the gang.

Best Tournament Ever

So when the WFDF gets around to it, I’ll be looking to nominate last weekend’s Badman’s Birthday Bash as the best tournament of the millennium, if not ever.

Ok, so we’re exaggerating slightly. But as we find ourselves back in the salt mines that we have to do to fund the plush amenities at stately Brisbane Ultimate Blog manor, its hard not to bottom out mood-wise after the highs of the weekend.

Badman’s Bash returned to the Lake Ainsley Recreation Centre, and while the grass wasn’t the lushest (but still very acceptable), all agreed that the combination of cabins next to the fields, beach next to the fields, lake next to the fields, pool next to the fields and partying on, around and next to the fields make it a great event. Props to Dan and aL for linemarking, and of course to Bads for his plover-removal service. While we’re at it – thanks to Jack for dragging the trailer and gear down and back.

A large number of folks trekked down from Brisbane and the Gold Coast (and insanely enough Townsville – you go Townsville kids!) and also up from Sydney and elsewhere around NNSW on the Friday night. And rather than the usual Ultimate tournament night before mellow drinks thing (broken only by a few of the hard core), Friday night pretty much saw everyone who was there up and about until the wee small hours (the larger of the small hours, actually).

For many on Friday night, it was time to have the facts of Badman’s Birthday Bash explained to them. This was not a win-at-all-costs-while-still-respecting-the-Spirit-of-the-Game-tournament. This was a have-fun-at-all-costs-while-respecting-the-limits-of-one’s-capacity-for-fun-tournament. And so it was. Two guys even came just to fish. The other fact to learn was that if you plugged your iPhone/pod/mpeg thingee into the music machine in an unauthorised manner, Bads would plug his music back in and hide your gadget and make you beg a bit and promise to never do it again before he’d tell you exactly where in the laundry cupboard he’s put it.

Saturday saw a large number of folks in attendance for the pulling of the names from the metaphorical hat, and a record six teams take the field in a full round robin of games to 9. Very sensible in the hot and slightly-tired-from-the-night-before-conditions. Full congratulations to the lamely-named Team Awesome, who were undefeated. If we recall correctly, Team Awesome would have taken on a depleted Trevor Goes to Badman’s in the final (which would have involved Tug of War rather than Ultimate), but everyone was too shagged. Its possible that Team Jeff took third place, Bad with Names fourth, Baby in a Blender fifth and ‘Ere We Go to the Jungle sixth. Corrections in the comments, please.

The day of six teams and two fields and games to 9 made for an innovative process for starting games. Essentially, as soon as you finished your game, you worked out who you were supposed to play next in the draw order, and then when you could find them, convince them to play and spot an empty field, then off you went. Yep, no worrying about the time and stuff. Many experienced tournament goers were unused to not having a TD urging them about getting started, but it worked out very well indeed. There was even the occasion of a ‘tactical hassle’, where teams battled to get their teams on the line (or something that looked like their team) and thus claim the field, while others were relegated to spectator status (which wasn’t so bad anyways).

The food was imported from the local pub and was once again great and easy. Having the cabins right there also meant an endless stream of cold beverages throughout the day. Props to Townsville Si for keeping it cool while performing a few odd jobs.

The end of play, dinner and the evenings’ socialising beautifully morphed from one to the other, as folks congregated under a tent here, in a cabin there, on the sand and in the lake. Many drinks were consumed to respond to thirsts generated through the day, all in a highly responsible manner. As Bads said, 10pm to 2am seemed to go in the blink of the eye, or perhaps a skip of the rope.

Sunday proceded in a stately manner, quiet suitable for those of us given to stateliness. JdR and Reece started off the day with some one-on-one Schtick, that slowly evolved into a very large game where keeping score was eventually forgotten about. Lunch brought pretty much everyone out, and then some casual Ultimate led the afternoon as folks slowly drifted away, like flowers in the breeze.

Talk for Badman’s Life, the University and Everything Birthday Bash 2010 is for each cabin to arrange its own theme and show off. We at the BUB are fully supportive of this, and have begun planning both strategy and tactics.

Thankfully, writing this blog post means that when the AFDA puts out its next call for nominations for Tournament of the Year, all we’ll have to do is send in the link.

Two Years Ago

Continuing our build up to tonight's BPL Final.

Two years ago, the Dojo faced the Crusty Buggers in the BPL 2007 Spring League Final - memories of which may fire up the Mojo, but also remind everyone that we like to see a well spirited game.

Bonus two years ago - Badman's Birthday Bash makes it's first visit to Lennox Heads (venue for this 2009 as well).

Travel to Badman's Birthday Bash

Its only two weeks until Badman's Birthday Bash.

Some folks in Brisbane are realising this is a great chance for some road trip action.

There are few better ways (that don't involve partying or playing) for Ultimate players to get to know each other that travelling to and from a tournament together.

Its a fairly dull story, but I'll never forget gaining respect in a young man's eye when he realised just exactly how I rolled, music-listening-wise.

Jack L is getting it out there first with his offer of a spare seat in his wheels, down and back.

If anyone else if looking for a lift or has one to offer, read or put something in the comments below (click on the word 'comments' to start reading or adding).

Happy Birthday Badman

5 November = Badman's Birthday

28-29 November = Badman's Birthday Bash. Have you registered? 44 other people have - not many places left ....

Have your answers to the perennial questions ready:
- Are you very good at Ultimate?
- Do you like to party?

The responses so far have been fairly entertaining. Notty "If You Take Ultimate Away There is Not Much of Me Left" Nott and Dusty "I Party Better Than Most" are standouts so far.

Border Crossings

For those in Brisbane who like to venture southwards on occasion, in pursuit of Ultimate pleasure ... from our intelligence provider on the Gold Coast:

The legend continues.

This coming Saturday marks the next date in the heated series between Byron and the Gold Coast.

This rivalry has traditionally been played as an 'open' only series ofgames. But this time around we will first play mixed game...potentially two depending on numbers. And then split into an Open game on one field and a Women's game on the other.

Games start at 1:00pm, and will probably go until about 4:30pm. At the fields in Byron Bay.

The aftermath will feature a collaboration of chaotic party styles, a few post game bevveys, and then a wild night in Byron Bay . A few of the Byron lads have offered
bed/couch/floor/camping space to make itaffordable for us to stick around for the night. ALL are welcomed... including any Brisbanites who are bored with
the drab monotony of the city life. (we'll divide ya amongst us.)

This WILL be a great day... come early, bring your surfboard.... contact one of the usual suspects to let them know you're coming ...

Also, don't neglect to get Badman's Birthday Bash on your calendar - 29-30 November.

Dadman!

Congrats to Byron Bay Ulti-kids Andrew 'Bads' Badman and Alex Taylor on the arrival of a baby girl on Friday 8 May. Byron Bay, Byron Baby, eh?

Names are still under discussion. We here at the Mansion suggest "Ultrastar" be in there somewhere.

Send your suggestions to the "Dadman" himself at waveoflife at hotmail dot com

Byron Easter Monday Special Session

If you're south of Brisbane for the Easter break, maybe you'll want to join the Byron (and Gold Coast) gangs for a throw on Monday evening at the usual Byron Ulti-fields - game on from 5pm playing through to 8pmish. It looks like with the Goldie crew heading down there'll be numbers for two games simulaneously.

Brisbane folks will of course be jealous of the wet weather plan - if the fields are closed due to rain then games will be played on the beach! But if you're wise, you'll have gone down for the day.

Contact Stef or Bads if you feel the need to contact anyone.

Bashing Down to Bads

Don't forget if you're driving down the Badman's Birthday Bash this weekend that the southerners are on daylight savings.

If its 10am in Byron, its 9am in Queensland.

Given its about 2-2.5 hours from Brisbane to Byron (depending on whether you are travelling with John 'Chugabug' McNaughton or Molly 'Penelope Pitstop' Young, or on the back of George's motorcycle) you'll want to be leaving Vegas by 6.30am Brisbane time.

Got Your Calendars Marked?

A few things for your calendar as we rush towards the end of 2008!

- Badman's Birthday Bash is on 15-16 November at Byron Bay. Do Bads and the Byron kids a favour and register early, and don't forget to organise yourself some accommodation. It looks like there's 37 Queenslanders registered so far ....

- The 2008 QUDA Bash is on again - lock in the evening of 22 November. Here's a summary of last year's bash. This year we'll be at the AJSC Soccer Clubhouse (next to where BPL and BUML are played) from 6pm onwards, with a bus into the city afterwards (from the Greenslopes Busway stop, 8 minutes walk away). Dinner is included and tickets will soon be on sale. Help the organisers by registering your interest.

- The 2008 QUDA Planning Weekend is coming soon too - its on the 22-23 November at the AJSC Clubhouse (handy place this is becoming to be!). Agendas and such to come, but this is a good way to find out what's planned for next year, and more importantly, have your say!

- BUML is only a short season this time around, so the end of year Final is not far off! Keep Monday 8 December clear!

- And to (probably) finish the year of Ultimate in Brisbane and Queensland, the Final of BPL Season 3 2008 is programmed for Thursday 11 December!

Badman's Birthday Bash Returns

Many people raved about this tournament last year.

While Bads hasn't been able to book the same venue, all the same high end food (that is, gourmet and special), fun-focused Ultimate and warm and lubed Byron-ite welcome will be there.

It’s a Mixed Hat – so guys and girls all register as individuals, and Mr Badman will randomly put you in a team. You can of course try giving Mr Badman a birthday kiss* to influence the selection process.

Its also in the 'Surf and Turf' format – one day of grass Ultimate, one day of beach Ultimate.

When: 15-16 November

Where: Byron Bay somewhere (about 2.5hr drive from Brisbane)

Register at: http://www.afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=924

Accommodation: Bads recommends booking some camping space at Clarkes Beach Caravan Park, or even a cabin or caravan.

Or you can camp in his yard if you are nice and get in early. Or ask one of your Byron friends if they can spare some floor space.

*Bads will provide you with a definition of a "birthday kiss", on request.

Badman's Birthday Bash

The lack of blogging has been due to the sheer fantastic awesomeness of the Badman's Birthday Bash two-day hat at Lennox Heads (south of Byron Bay) on the weekend.

It was so good its difficult to write about in a coherent fashion. The venue was outstanding. The food was outstanding. The people were outstanding.

I can only suggest you catch up with one of the lucky people who were there.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in making it a great event.

Molly has posted some of her great photos, featuring the fine people, lovely campfire and quality play.

And here's a couple from me:

Blue sky, lush fields. Beach off to the left, lake off to the right.

The Cabins we stayed in were right next to the fields.

Fine food.

Badman's Birthday Cake!

I predict the next one of these to be heavily oversubscribed - so if you see the chance, register early!
